dealer does not recomend going to synthetic

In checking out the specs on that NAPA synthetic, it doesn't seem to be all that impressive. I'm almost tempted to just pay $21/jug and get the Castrol Edge synthetic instead. The QS syntec is also on sale this week but I don't want to rely on a coupon...sound like several here have had problems with that.

Everything I have read is that Napa Synthetic is basically Valvoline SynPower.

Valvoline makes the aforementioned NAPA synthetic, and its decent as far as anyone knows, meets or exceeds specs.

Not that I want to agree with you however you are right on this point.

It's nonsense the idea that going from syn to mineral is in any way harmful. How would a blend exist if that were the case.

Synthetics are highly overrated. Most of our dino oil is partially group 3 synthetic anyway. Only benefit to synthetic is the ability to extend the OCI further. I don't think it even outperforms as far as deposit cleaning goes these days anymore. I guess you can say it flows thinner when its cold and thicker it when its hot then conventional but not so much better that it's going to actually extend the life of your motor.
So unless you're looking to greatly extend your OCI I say save money and throw in some conventional

From what I've seen so far the synthetics seem to go on sale more often than the conventionals. As long as that's the case, I'm happy to ride on a quality synthetic oil at the same or cheaper price than the same company's dino. Even if they priced PYB, QS GTX, VWB, Mobil S5K, and others at a $1.50/qt, I don't mind "stepping" up and paying $2.50/qt for PP, QSUD, Synpowerl, and M1. The added benefits of better cold flow in the snow belt and longer life are worth the extra $0-$5 at oil change time. I've got 3 years of OCI's at $2-$2.75/qt on synthetic.

I'm so sick of people who think like this! You can switch between blends & synthetics in your truck as much as you want. And if you had a vehicle that didn't require DEXOS approval, you could switch between conventional, blends & synthetics as much as you want. I can't believe people are still thinking this way.

Yea ,i hit a sale at autzone where i got tons of edge motor oil and m1 atf all for $2 a quart. That was enoigh to make be bite. I cleaned them all out lol. Aldo got 4 qts of valvoline durablend for $10 5qt jugs. Which is decent.
So yeah, if you can get it for the same price why not? But most people leave their oil in the store shelves until its time to change and therfore arent so likley to hit those deals

So you get 4 free changes and you want to hassle the dealership? They will use DEXOS oil and that's good enough to get through warranty without issue.

If you want to go to personal oil, wait until the free'bies are done ...

That's when you go to the dealer and pull that guy aside and say listen I'm not an old lady or a retard. Next time try not to act like I'm one. I still can't believe dealerships lie as much as they do. Its like hello internet.

Agree with everyone above that says it's hogwash. Dealer's dead wrong and wants to use the cheap oil.

I'd take the free oil changes and when they're done, put in what you like.

For the last two GM vehicles I have owned, they got the "free" oil change thing with them. Never used it. Why? Well, let's see... shut down my business for a morning or afternoon, drive a minimum 30 miles to the dealership, wait for them to turn a 20 minute job into over an hour or longer, and go home. So the "freebie" has ended up costing me about $1000 in lost time and revenue. Don't live in an area where dealers around me have more than Monday thru Friday shop hours or even loaner vehicles. So once I buy a new vehicle, unless there is a warranty issue, it stands a pretty good chance of never seeing the dealership again. Suits me fine. After the few times of seeing dealership shops basically acting like I just stepped into a classic Keystone Cops movie clip, I am quite comfortable with not having anything to do with them again. Must be many more like me since GM is cutting back on the free oil change and even the warranty now.

May be a moot point since their bulk tanks may not be filled with this oil. They could be putting 5W30 in everything.

Take the free oil changes then swap to full synthetic dexos and worry not. Just another GM bailout employee trying to justify his job on your wallet. If he gives you guff about wanting full synthetic then tell him your going to Alaska and need a oil that will handle the cold. If he still fights you tell him to buy you a import that will get you there if he's concerned.

The dealer is wrong. I was offered $8 oil changes for life when I bought my 08 Liberty. I passed, free isn't for me. I agree with Tired Trucker. I have better things to do with my time. The $8 oil change would cost a lot more in lost time, and I would rather not use bulk dino oil. Oh yea and the up-sell pitch for other services, no thanks. The choice was easy.

FTR-my dealership has been surprisingly good with a recent warranty repair. Maybe one day I'll have them do a transmission service or something if the price is reasonable............

OP - as many have already stated, the dealer is wrong. I would take the 4 free changes with their bulk oil. After that, go with any Dexos rated oil. I like synthetics and have run them in all my vehicles for years. I also use blends - Maxlife - in my high mileage vehicles. The two Fords listed in my sig have had dino, blended and syn in them since I owned them with no issues.

I had a Tahoe with the 5.3L. I ran Amsoil, Mobil 1, Red Line and Royal Purple (only ran it once). I ran Amsoil the most in the engine and exclusively in the trans and rear. When I sold it she had 188,xxx on the clock and was tight as a drum. No leaks or drips on the ground. Pulled a travel trailer, had a chip in it, CAI and cat back. She was a good vehicle.

Whatever oil you pick, get it analyzed every oil change. That is very important and a step that should not be skipped. The analysis will tell you what is going on in your engine. My $.02.

There isn't any conventional oil with a "Dexos" rating.
