The CVT in our 2014 Sentra is acting up: shudder below 5mph and occasional squealing. Stopped by the dealer - they had 3 replaced units just sitting on the floor. You would think Jatco would have this worked out by now... appointment this Tuesday.... I imagine they will recommend either a software update or a replacement.

Get everything in writing on the service invoice esp if they only do a software update. Time to start documenting everything. Maybe even look at an Altima. I like the looks of the Sentra but they really seemed to have cut corners with quality.

starting maybe 10k miles ago it would shudder at low speeds, but only occasionally ( a couple of times a week )
Now it happens a lot in stop and go driving - and I can induce it on demand: just slow down below 5 mph and hold at 2-3 mph and it starts and will keep shuddering. Certainly the CVT's have gotten alot of bad press, and of course Jatco claims that this latest version (v7) resolves all issues. It does return impressive MPG: 40 mpg highway. It has a power train warranty until 5/60; and we got an extended warranty. I was hoping that this car would make it to 200k. I have no doubt it will need a few CVT's along the way.

I have a 15 and at the rate that I'm putting miles on my car (just had the 20k service earlier this week), I am going to be very grateful that I sprung for an extended warranty if the CVT problems rear their ugly head soon.

tomcat27 (or anybody with similar experience), was the Sentra throwing codes (also known as, warning lights with fault codes)???

I recently had a 2015 Altima with another jatco cvt act up. No codes, and dealership I limped into thought there should be some "evidence" codes to light the diagnostic proverbial way. Rental car, but I stopped at the dealership to get an opinion. Car was very slow to get going from a stop, hesitating, engine was running fine, and it also stayed at high RPMs when underway at 35 mph. strange

Then, after being shutdown for 15 minutes, the Altima started running well again, problem gone. (I turned the thing into Hertz rental and swapped for another vehicle.)

There are no trouble codes or any other symptoms. Most of my miles are highway - and I suppose I could theoretically wait to take it in since it's not debilitating. The service advisor that I spoke to did not seem surprised, but did not offer up any information regarding cause, solution, or track record. as stated earlier, I did notice that they had 3 used CVT's on the floor - presumably dead ones that have been replaced. I also noticed when I bought our Rogue that there were two Marano's up on lifts with their transmissions out. I have never liked the CVT in the Sentra around town - on the highway its fine. and any Nissan with a V6 has enough torque to eliminate the "rubber band effect" (in my opinion). I would like some statistics on failure rates and ultimate solutions - but don't expect them. I have many friends who have had multiple Sentras in their families for years and everyone raves about the longevity and durability. I somehow expect some problems with the CVT though.

My wife drives a 11 Quest with the 3.5 and CVT. So far, I have been impressed, the CVT really helps keep the 3.5 in its powerband for quick acceleration, and keeps the RPMs low when at cruising speed to return good economy.
We have 72k or so on it now and have had no issues. I did change the fluid out at 60k.

Hopefully you just got a defective unit and the replacement will last a long time!

My CVT has 163k miles on it and has been really great. I haven't changed the fluid in it yet. I will get a fluid evacuator and take out 2 quarts every six months for awhile to slowly change it out.
I've read where people who have had their CVTs fluid inspected and their deterioration numbers have all been well below the 210,000 mark. Which is the number which means it needs to be replaced at.

My mom has a 2012 Jeep Patriot 2.0L CVT (Jatco unit). It drives fine, but developed a loud whining noise. Earlier this year at 60k miles I took it into the dealer and they said it was the alternator. They replaced the alternator (extended warranty

) and that didn't fix it. Took it back in and they diagnosed as transmisison. Said the first step is changing the fluid in it. Cost $180 and that made the whining noise go away.

Hopefully it starts making the awful noise again before it runs out of warranty and they replace the whole thing.
