Outside of a torn boot, I've never seen a case of a "failed" CV axle save for two particular applications:
2008+ Nissan Rogue RF and Subaru Forester/Outback front, either side. I have to imagine it has to due with the OE joint angles, but I've come across many a case of front end "wobble" under load which almost always cured by replacing the shafts.
Specific to the Rogue: I've found through trial and error that most if not all aftermarket units for this application are defective on arrival. The only sure fire way to cure the issue is to install an OEM part.
