was changing the oil in my civic and decided to poke around while under the car. All CV boots are intact, although I’ve noticed some play in the axle at transmission side. Is this acceptable or should there be 0 play at all (both axial and torsional)?

I always compare both sides to see if there is a difference. I changed the passenger side on my minivan last weekend as it was sloppy compared to the driver side. The new one was noticably tighter installed, but seemed less different on the workbench.

In the end it’s piece of mind for me. It felt sloppy and my gut said change it. I used a factory replacement and not an auto parts store axle due to too many bad reviews. I’d rather change it once for $500 than every year after

I did the same thing, I found a NOS Honda outer joint for a 1993 for $150, the retail for around $300

I think it may be normal to have about 1/4 inch, however when I replaced my outer joint with a New OEM Joint it did not have any play.

I’m referring to the play not in the CV joint itself, but between the splines that go through the transmission (6MT in my case). Is that what you’re referring to as well? There’s no play in either outer or inner CV joint itself

Your carrier bearings may be going bad...any fluid leak at the tranny???
