Okay, okay. I have gone nuts like some of you. I now have a desire to cut open filters.
So what are the best tool recomendations for someone who wants a quick and easy way for less than say 50.00?

I used a hacksaw and a vise. Cost, $0.00. Need to make sure all the oil is out first. The first one I did I thought was empty and started cutting, when the cut portion was facing down, oil started dripping onto the floor. The second one I cut open, I made a 1/4 inch cut along the bottom and then put it back into the oil drain pan with the opening facing down. The next day cut it open with no problems.
If you do it this way, make sure you hold the filter by the base end between the jaws, otherwise you crush the canister and makes it harder to cut.

Yea, the hacksaw is bad about that if your trying to look at what is actualy filtered by the filter, not what gets in from cutting it open.
Gary, do you have this one, or just one you have seen? For $40, it may be worth it.

No, this is just the cheapest I've seen to date. My friend has one and I get to use it. I haven't quite seen one identical to his ..but they're all the same basic design. I imagine the difference is durability/quality. They all seem to take the same size cutting wheels.
I'm with T-keith on this one. A $5.00 "swing-a-way" can opener works just fine along with a screw driver. Just be careful for it is real easy to stab yourself when prying with the screw driver. Have cut over 40 of them so far this way-some are harder than others but if their is a will their is a way.

Last I saw Fleetguard offered a filter cutter. Heavy duty model, similar to Stinkies..

I've got one from Summit. Looks the same and cost about the same. Does a good job.
I use a exhaust pipe cut off tool from Harbor Freight tools. Works great, no fuss, no cuttings in the filter and no jagged edges.

If you are a serious filter cutter then this is the way to go. It's a little spendy at $88.17 but it does a great job and doesn't leave filing or grit like other methods. We encourage filter cutting on every filter removed from service because there is a lot of information in among those pleats!
