I got my oil changed with Synpower 5w-20 about 4,500 miles ago, still in my honda now. It was driven on short trips a couple miles often being on a college campus but also quite a few 100+mile trips. I'm thinking of changing it out soon with the Mobil 1 EP waiting in my garage. Just wondering how long you guys think I should let this go since it has been a rough winter around here. Until I joined here, thank god, I had really been following the 3,000mile oci recommendations at the local valvoline quicklube religiously even on synpower never going over 4,000 miles so its a little new to me so slightly uncomfortable pushing it too far but from everything I read her it will be fine for a few thousand more.

also hoping to stock up on some of those formula shell/pyb deals i've been reading about at target. I don't think I'd be comfortable pushing that past a 5k oci really.

Any oil will go 5000 miles without a problem every 3000 is a waste of money and i believe when you change oil and filter the engine runs dry for a couple of seconds until the filter fills up so that is why i leave my filter on till 5000 miles..

Opinions vary wildly. I just run Amsoil and change pretty much everything at 1 year with a reasonable mileage accumulation. Been doing it for 16 years. I certainly don't think I incur any more wear than anybody that does 3K dino changes 3-4 times a year.

I did change my car that I drive now at 8-9 mths for a couple of years. Since then I have been doing the one year change. It's a 98 and I don't feel that it uses anymore oil then it ever has.

Mobil EP should be an easy 8-12 months assuming your miles don't pile up like crazy.

Sounds like your plans are kind of all over the place talking about Mobil EP and Pennzoil YB? If your car is out of warranty no worries.

No warranty. And I've had the Mobil EP in the garage for a year or two just want to use it up but then my stash is empty so I was thinking of stocking up on whats cheap while I can get it. I know my littler 4 cylinder doesn't "need" synthetic and I think it would run fine on dino, PYB or FS, for a 4-5k oci from reading and such on here. Better than paying like $65 per oil change at the quick lube for synpower. If I can get 5qts of FS or under 10 bucks and change it myself I'd be more than happy with those savings.

You have thrown two options out, shorter changes w/ conventional or longer OCI's w/ Syn. M1 EP is IMO the best oil on the common market for the price. Yes there are "boutique oils" like RP, Amsoil and Redline that are very good indeed (I choose Amsoil because they back it up like no one else) but you will pay more. I would say if your schedule of driving is over 50% short trips (under 10mi) use a cheaper oil and change often. If not use a more expensive oil and ride it out to 8-10K. Short trips where the oil doesn't have a chance to heat up to full temp really is rough on oil thus I would change earlier. That is just my opinion, many would not agree but I stay on the side of oil changes being cheap insurance. Your engine is inherently easy on oil so you have one shot in your favor right there. The 3k/3mo. rule is frivolous and wasteful but it keeps engines clean. Try 5/5 and do a UOA.
