Cummins diesel engines

Currently have the '01 Cummins diesel dodge truck automatic. Heck of a towing machine that's for sure.

We have more aftermarket gauges then you can spit at, as we tow a 5th wheel with it, run it off-road, etc. Currently has 120k or so, everything original. Auto tranny hasn't skipped a beat; we do change the fluid every year and we are not rough and fast drivers either, I do believe that helps with longetivity.

We have always, in the past, been die-hard Chevy truck fans. Still are, however, we were burned pretty badly with the last 3/4 ton '99 Chevy 6.0L Vortec gas engine.

Truck had great power; gas mileage was half, however, of what we can manage in the Cummins. GREAT ride, cab space, etc. however, this particular one was a 5-spd, in which the throw-out bearing kept going out, brakes WERE horrible all around, engine kept throwing out the freeze plugs, main computer went out twice.

Aside from that, it was a beautiful truck...just got tired of constant issues and it only had 80k miles on it.

We looked to trade it for a Duramax, but never could find a reasonably priced used one. In fact, I could've bought 2 Dodge diesels for the price of ONE Duramax....it was just too ridiculous for us to keep looking.

The Cummins 5.9L HO inline 6 is a he$$ of an engine; can't speak for the newer ones though as it looks like we won't be needing one for a LONG time.

I would buy a ford, but if you can stomach a dodge, the cummins is hard to beat!

you obviously get your info from other super truckers. Theirs NO Such engine as the 6226. NO "big time" ford guy would ever say the 7.3L powerstroke was junk. It was the best diesel ford ever installed PERIOD.

The international version the T444E was a bit over worked when put into anything heavier than 10 tons, but it was just as dependable.

I'm looking out my window right now at 2 7.3L powerstrokes, One with 340,9xx Miles and the other with 291,XXX miles.

have anything else to say super trucker?

+1 I'm a Dodge guy, but I've been around all 3 makes long enough to have a lot of respect for the old 444 CID Powerstroke. Compared to something like the DT466E it might have been a bit of a lightweight, but then a DT466 that can run a half million miles and then be rebuilt in-chassis is just not necessary for most medium-duty trucks. Therefore the 444 was about the perfect engine for the application, IMO.

AGREED!!! The pre emissions DT466 was the best medium duty motor ever as far as im concerned. It even edges out the Cummins 8.3L ISC.

I have personally be searching for a International 4300 or 4700 with a DT530 for a bit. I'm looking for A crew cab with the premium interior and air brakes, mated to a 6spd Allison or a 10spd road ranger.

That was an after treatment issue that was created in the the regen programing. Blame Ford

The regen issues are the least of the 6.4s problems.

What else have you ran into? The most recent issue I've had was where the injectors remained open and melted down the pistons along with epic turbo failure.

That's a fairly common occurence from what I've seen. The wonderful piezo injectors...

Here's a Ford with a bad fuel pump. 25-hours labor according to tech. Normal.

Step One: Remove body from frame . . .

Stick with Dodge if you want reliability. On a truck little else matters. I searched for and found a 2004 305HP/555TQ with NV56 6-speed and 2wd. 19 mpg city, and 22 mpg highway. Just keep the rpms between 1700-1900 for any and all driving.

Service is straightforward. At 6-mos/6,000 I change air, oil and fuel filters plus engine oil. All other fluids every other year. Tires at around 100,000. Complete brake job at about the same.

Drive it like you own it.

Wait till it needs work!!!

My uncle had that problem with his almost-new F250. Then, they had to do it again shortly after because they screwed something up during the install, which is also apparently fairly common. Previously, he had a 6.0L that he used for towing his fifth-wheel for a few years with no problems before it was stolen and trashed while wintering in Arizona.
