Cub Cadet or John Deere

All the cub cadets with kawi's listed on their website have tuff torq hydrostat. Make sure you you what one your getting. Likely a k44 like most others. Might want to take a second look at the 2000 series with the hydro gear and kohler.

Check out the husqvarna. You can get a Kawasaki motor and either a hydro gear g730 or the tuff torq k66.

Kinda in between a John Deere x300 and x500 for the price of a x300.

Right, but the HG G730 is only offered on the most expensive Cub 1000 series.

If you're also referring to the Cub 2K series, that's a whole other animal with an MTD/Cub built cast iron rear axle/differential, driven by a hydrogear BDU drive. Those hold 6qts of oil.

There are even kits out there to replace them with a tuff turq 66. They are ok as long as you only cut grass on level lawns. My 40 has 100 hours on it and it is starting to get weak and it will barely back up with a little garden trailer. It was never very powerful.
Mytractorforums and lawn mower forums have some good info on them. They are serviceable hydrostat though your dealers probably will tell you otherwise. You can get the parts from tuff torq's website. You can even upgrade them to the k57 or 58 Hydrostat as its the same housing. I have never heard of a hydro gear failure although I'm sure they are out there.

A TT 40 that's backing up slow doesn't necessarily mean the unit is shot, it may be a linkage adjustment. A weak hydro will loose power in both directions.

Didn't say it was shot. Just doesn't have the power it used to. When it has a hard time going into my shed that has a 6" incline I think it is getting weak, not shot. If it was a linkage issue it would back up, just slowly. Not sit there and whine or need a run to get in there.

Got it.

That is odd at only 100hrs though. How old is the unit? I'm sure you've run though the basic stuff: Make sure the drive is blown free of debris, make sure fan is intact, etc.

Might be rejuvenated with a simple fluid/oil change.

Good point lexus.

I know TT used to factory-fill (and recommend) 10w30 for their light hydro transaxle line. That's too light IMO. I wouldn't go lighter than HD 15w40 in any newer one-piece hydrostatic transaxle. In fact, for one that only holds a few qts, I'd probably go 20w50.

I called TT about my 44 and they said M1 15w-50 would work great

Changed mine out at only 50 hours, and it works like a champ.

Just treat it like a car with a fragile slushbox, service it early and often...

I keep reading this thread about the Cub Cadets with Kawa engines. I went to a Home Depot/ Cub Cadet test drive and got the brochure. It shows a CC LTX1045 with a single Kohler 20 hp engine, a LGT 1054 with a V twin 26 hp engine. Then there are various models of the LGTX with 25 hp and 27 hp V twin Kohler engines. All are hydrostatic auto trans. Where are the Kawa's? Is the HOme Depot getting a different line of engines? Whidh is better engine? Which is more reliable , easier to work on, easier to get parts for,?

Jim, last I knew the Kawasaki engine + Tuff Torq transaxle units are only available at Cub Cadet dealers. Last year they were about $100 more than the big box units with Kohler engines.

So is the Kawasaki V twin and the Tuff Torq trans the best combination. $100.00 is nothing to pay extra for as long as I plan to keep it. I am looking for reliability and ease of maintenance. But is the Kawa and TT hydrastatic trans better than the Kohler?

Historically, Kawasaki and Tufftorq have been used on higher end OPE like high dollar JD's, etc.

Is it the same caliber of equipment being used in a ~$2500 Cub Cadet? I dunno. For ~$100, I'd be willing to go that route anyway.
