CT Coronary Calcium Scan

Based upon my age primary care Dr. was ordering EKG and Echocardiogram and I asked about the CT Coronary Calcium test as I read about it and only $100. Roughly. He said we can order that. Insurance does not cover it so maybe doctors do not order it as routine.

It may indeed save my life as all other tests are fine.
Very good, please update once you meet with cardiologist. Im curious what he may or may not do. Im curious NOT to give advice, Im curious because I like to learn and be informed.
Im not sure if they can do a stress test with insurance to pay for it if they have no symptoms, but there is always a way to justify it.
Anyway, Ill be curious at the outcome once you get your appointment and for whatever it is worth, being proactive is a good thing.

Doing your best to prevent a heart attack leads to a better quality of life. Meaning, not sure how many people realize that with each heart attack, heart muscle is killed off and the damage is forever, the heart cannot repair itself so everything you can do in your power will benefit you now, including as you know, a change in the way you eat.

What I find odd is one side had zero calcium and the other side was very high. A question for cardiologist.

I am a computer guy not a doctor but read a CIMT test is better than a stress test.

I sure hope this is not because of my addiction to Diet Pepsi.

I don't think this test is usable for those that already had a heart attack-cardiac surgery from when I looked into it years ago.

I have my health issues, but my Calcium Score was 0. It makes some sense to me, as when I'm feeling well, my heart performance is pretty good.

For a while, my cardiologist had me taking Crestor and D3+K2-mk7. Then after having autoimmune issues, we stopped that for years. Now I'm back on the D3+K2-mk7. What's strange to me is that my entire family is riddled with heart disease and clogged arteries. My father had his first hard clogged artery in his mid 40's. I'm only a data point of one, but I do think the K2 removes calcium.

I also take amino acids and some are known to help clear arteries.

I found another cardiologist and have an appointment at the end of May with their PA. I have been reading a lot and there is a lot to learn. And sometimes the reading makes me worry more.

One statement in a book that I found odd was this "the treatment you get may be more to do with where you live and what procedures your doctor was trained in than the medical condition you have".

And I have some work to do to get my LDL below 70. It's at 92 now.

So in order to eat less carbs for snacking I buy string cheese since it's got no added sugar, etc.
But it's got a lot of my saturated fat even the part-skim variety.

An update. My primary doctor referred me to a different cardiologist who could see me sooner. She ordered a nuclear stress test (done) and a heart monitor for a week (wearing now,). And follow up appt in 6 months. Said no restrictions on any activities. And EKG said I have never had a heart attack. Wants me to get LDL down below 60. Doubled statin to 20mg.

Primary doctor said the CT calcium scan found scarring in right lung. So he ordered a CT scan of lung.

Tests then more tests.

I have given up cheese. Cannot eat cheese and get LDL down.

The tech explained everything about the heart monitor. Once a day take it off to recharge it. Take shower and dry chest well. When it's recharged use new adhesive pads for probes. Probes go in very specific places.

What they forgot to mention is the adhesive pads itch and they need to go in same place on chest for a week.

Just read an article on "low value testing", tests that are run that produce no real medical benefit to the patient. Will your medical treatment be any different after the test? I wonder if that is happening to me where one test leads to many tests.

A family member figured out on his own, taking Magnesium supplement of 400mg a day solved his PVC issues. Cardiologist and cardiac electrophysiologist were amazed. He went from what he says about 100,000 PVC's a day (Every heartbeat) to 100
Take this with a grain of salt, talk to your doctor of course as his doctors are now aware and told him to keep taking it, also a blood test for Magnesium should be done, he was in the lower green zone. He also has diabetes.
His heart not in great shape though you wouldnt know it if you met him.
AMEN. I will second the magnesium glycinate I take. It helps alot with my Afib and any muscle cramps and I sleep alot better too. I am generally magnesium deficient as I've had several feet of small intestine removed due to crohn's disease.
Magnesium glycinate is what I take as some of the others give me diarrhea (magnesium citrate is Milk of Magnesia). Some estimates put general population at almost 70% having some level of deficiency. I dont know why this isn't addressed more publicly. Diet is one of the greatest controlling factors for our health.

the CAC i mentioned + noted Ivor Cummins is a coronary artery calcium check + it "sees" how much calcification in your "pipes" so if your smart YOU usually can fix it WITHOUT drugs by proper eating aka lo carb as its the carbs-sugars that caused the issue!! reading that magnesium is hard to test as its not much in your blood. many nutrients are VERY important + lacking in todays poor food sources so supplements can help IMI!!
It seems the food Pyramid is killing us.

Don, Ive been following your posts and think you are VERY fortunate in your doctors care.. I am pretty informed about the heart, Fathers side of the family is a train wreck when it comes to it.
I so far avoided a lot of the issues. Im the only one without a quad bypass, only one without diabetes, only one that has not had a heart attack ( as least that we know of) and only one with less than 20% of my hearts veins clogged, no stents. However, as explained, there is genetics and I do have an issue.

In the last few years some nagging issues have come up, uncomfortable sensations in my chest. Ive been through a couple nuclear stress tests, which last year lead to "the gold standard" and that was a heart cauterization. I was thrilled about that, a stress test will only show clogs in your hearts viens once they get up to around 60 to 70 clogged. I learned my veins are in great shape only up to 20% because of the Cauterization procedure. I felt VERY lucky to have been able to get the procedure.

However again, the nagging issue of these sensations, which for year my regular primary doctor discounted because my ECGs (aka EKG) were always good, HOWEVER when you get an ECG its only taking a snap shot of your heart for those 15 seconds that its hooked up to your chest, there is NO way to know if anything is happening during the day or night other than those 15 seconds.

Ok, so look at it this way, your doctors =
Your heart has two systems, just like a car engine.
There is the plumbing system veins, valves ect much like a cars fuel system
Then there is the electrical system (nerves) the electrical system of your body sends a signal to the heart for it to beat. Much like a spark plug sends an electrical pulse to the spark plug.
If either one of these systems fail, just like a car engine, your heart stops beating. Some, including myself don't realize how important the electrical system is, the only reason your heart beats is because of PRECISION timing for sending that signal to the heart.

Be thankful your Dr has you wired up for one week, he will have a clear idea if the signals to your heart are in rhythm or if anything dangerous is going on. I go to bed sometimes (even though I got used to it) wondering if I will wake up the next day.
If the signal one day stops, no warning, while you sleep, you don't wake up ever.

I have something going on with my signals. THANKS to APPLE for my Apple Watch and its ECG function.
This year again, I started getting these sensations, after last years cauterization I am taking a beta blocker as some PVCs did show up, but much of the population has them, some never know it. Then there is vary degrees and they can get intense. The Beta blocker took care of some of it.

Well, anyway, my Apple watch picked up some pretty funky things, I sent them to my cardiologist, two nights in a row recently I was getting some pretty heavy stress in my chest.
I actually messaged the Apple Watch ECGs to the Dr.
They set me up on a 48 hour monitor that I wore, I was THRILLED (I only wish it was for a week though)
In that 48 hours, finally, all my thoughts and feelings as well as my Apple Watch was confirmed and while I was being monitored for that 48 hours it wasn't as severe as the preceding days, (it comes and goes, sometimes for a month or two)
IN the 48 hours I had over 21,000 PVC's and even more concerning was one limited 8 beat VT (aka VTach) VT tach can lead to another issue and it results in sudden death.
Fortunately because of these results I just had my first Echogram.

SO good news is, the plumbing side of my heart is in great shape, my heart is in great shape too, considering my age also.
However its confirmed now something is going on with the electrical side and I now have an appt with a CardoElectrophysicist.
Again, up to 50% of the population has some misfiring of the heart but there are varying degrees and also different types. The VTACH is serious and it showed up after being monitored for only 48 hours, this could have been happening or happens for years and days, the only way to know if it is happening is being monitored.
I can't remember how you ended up with all these tests, if you were having symptoms or not or if this was part of a check up but if you were having symptoms I look for and want all the tests available to me to get to the bottom of it.
Trust me, if its not justified your ins most likely will not approve it.
I paid health ins my whole life, now that something isn't right, I want to be treated no different then the President of the United States.
I hope this helps and makes sense, kind of rushing as I am in a hotel room in Florida and getting ready to leave and go back home.

PS, I realized I posted much of this story before but had some new developments and just trying to help, kind of passionate about this subject.
Number 1 killer and a lot of it isn't caught in time.

Thank you so much! I need to try sometning. I also look like I'm in good shape due to my strength work. The reality is a different story.
If you have 100k PVCs a day (every beat) you have a serious conduction problem or electrolyte imbalance which would be caught on bloodwork and I doubt it would be survivable since your heart is not beating effectively. I can't imagine a good cardiologist letting someone roam free in that condition which essentially works out to be sustained vtach- they'd most likely send you to the hospital in an ambulance.

An update from nuclear stress test:

A small area of fixed perfusion defect is present in the inferior wall and it is consistent with scar or prior myocardial infarction. No reversible defects are present to suggest ischemia.

This was the net of what was found on the above mentioned test. Once my heart monitor is done on Monday then I need to go back for an office visit.

I had this one.
You do nothing and it was easy as pie...shower with it on. If you feel bad push the button and it records..

Mine records 24x7 and needs to come off for a recharge (and my shower) daily.
Mine required none of that and was a 24/7 one week deal with no effort.
At the end I peeled it off and sent it in with the post paid box they supplied.
Last time I had one of those old wired jobs which was a hassle with the big black box.
