Had to get some gas tonight so while I was out at the market I ran across the street to the Shell station. I don't usually use the station as they are always 10-15 cents more than everyone else but it was right there and I was just topping off a 6 gallon can I use for my boat so I ran over.
Drove up to the pump and entered my CC. When it authorized I removed the nozzle and selected the grade as normal. I was like WTH however when the pump finally turned on. It started out with a 3 cent total??? This wasn't some kind of pre-existing thing either as the pump had been used before me and showed like $40. After my CC was authorized and I selected the grade it showed all zeros. Then when it showed the octane and price I selected and was ready for me to start pumping it suddenly showed a 3 cent balance and a tiny fraction of fuel pumped???
Now I realize it is just 3 cents but it is the point of the whole thing. I hadn't pumped anything yet( the nozzle was still in my hand out in the open )but it already had me owing money.
So, I went in fully planning to give them the benefit of the doubt that the pump may be malfunctioning. The clerk at the register that I spoke with tried to tell me it was impossible and argued with me about it. That set me off right there and I started getting mad and said maybe I should call the Police and then the State and let them know you are ripping people off.
At that point the manager came running up all apologetic and trying to get me to be quiet. He tried to say it was because the person before me had lifted the hose up to drain every last drop out and that it had to reprime the hose when the pump started and that is why it showed the 3 cents. I told him that was [censored], BUT, if it was true it wasn't on me to pay to reprime his hose. There should be no balance owed until I run the pump/squeeze the nozzle and actually dispense gas.
I also told him I have also used pumps many times after the person ahead of me did that and it NEVER started me off owing before I had pumped a drop. I then said it is only 3 cents but it is still crooked and I guess I need to report it to the authorities. He about pee'd his pants at that point and begged me not to. He said he would get it fixed asap and ran right out and put an Out Of Order slip on it.
I know it was just 3 cents but I hope you all can understand why it ticked me off. More so when I went in and the loser clerk called me a liar and then the manager tried to feed me come cock-and-bull story. I haven't reported them to anyone yet and probably won't. I do know I won't use the station again.
