Crock-pot cheesy chicken

-4 chicken breasts
-1 1/4 cup white wine (1 and 1/4 cup)
-1 can Campbells Golden mushroom soup
-1 packet dry italian dressing mix
-1 brick cream cheese (low fat is ok)
-optional add mushrooms
-serve over rice

Sounds tasty...but what temp?? How long??

Crocks pots are low, medium, and high usually, and most recipes tell you to cook it for the entire day low and slow.

I cook it on low for 8 to 10 hours, then shred the chicken with a fork and stir.

Sounds good but canned potatoes? I think it would be better if fresh potatoes are used. I prefer organic potatoes because conventional ones are known to be high in pesticides.

Lurch,

You should investigate what the Cancer society has said about Organic Food and non-organic food and pesticides. It might surprise you.

In short Organic is more marketing than anything else when you dig deep enough. I know you want the best for your health.

I'm gonna leave it here because I don't want the thread to get off topic.

I've done much research on organic foods vs conventional. I've known health conscious people for several years from all over the world. We've been over this debate many times.

Organic food tastes better to me than conventional for one thing, plus I believe they are usually much better quality, in general. There may be at times growers of lesser quality produce, but in general, most are very good. I'm familiar with several brands that I usually buy.

Personally, I would take anything the ACS says with a grain of salt.

The ACS are allopathic and make BILLIONS of $$ in profits from cancer. Cancer is, unfortunately, one of the biggest profit makers in the USA and probably other countries. They don't want ANYTHING cutting into their profits and will say anything to protect those profits. Cures for cancer have surfaced over and over again and the ACS always tries to make them look like scams, in favor of less effective and more expensive therapies like chemo and radiation.

The ACS has no clue IMHO.

I've thought of it but it's a lot of work.

There is actually a better food than organic, and that is what's called "high brix" produce. Even organic produce is often not farmed properly in balanced soil and if often low brix.

I have a refractometer device that's used to measure sugar content of produce, which correlates with alkaline mineral content and nutritional value.. I know people that only eat high brix foods and say they're healthier because of it. I was going to also but gave up on the idea, at least for now. High brix produce isn't easy to find.

Organics tend to be lower in pesticides in general. They say in general, that conv produce tends to have higher brix readings than organic.

Add 3 tablespoons of tomato paste, a tablespoon and a half of your favourite yeast extract, some pepper, and a teaspoon of garlic powder.

Mix these and the beef up until you can pat them down well into the base of the crockpot.

Add a layer of coarsely chopped onion,
a layer of coarsely chopped celery,
a chopped swede
a chopped parsnip
a layer of chopped potato (optional, see below)
a couple of chopped carrots
Some chopped green beans

Some dried herbs (rosemary and thyme)

Tip in a 700(ish) gramme tin of crushed tomatoes, and smooth it over the top of the pile.

Then pour in a 375ml stubby of guiness (or other stout).

Cook all day...mix well before the last 2 hours of cooking. The beef mixed with tomato paste seems to make the beef more tender.

optional - dumplings
if we aren't having dumplings, we include potatoes as above.

Dumplings are
1-1/2 cups of self raising stone ground wholemeal flour.
1tbsp butter, worked through the flour to make "breadcumbs"
Enough milk to make a dough sticker than scone dough.

form into 6 balls, and add on top of the stew an hour and a half before serving.

Serves 4 for dinner, and 2-4 work lunches.

shannow, we will be making this for satruday night... ready to rumble...

crinkles, I forgot a major part of the recipe. A cup of really finely chopped pumpkin. It breaks down in cooping and thickens the gravy.

oops, too late. she's a cookin. we did add sweet potato cos we had to get rid of it, so we'll see how it goes... smells good and guinness at 9am sure tastes good...

Walked into the supermarket today and they had GOAT.

Bought it straight away, as hopefully they will keep stocking if people buy the stuff.

Took a haunch looking bit.

Put a cup and a half of water in the crock pot.
Stick of celery chopped.
Three cloves of garlic, crushed under a knife (skin and all)
Half an onion, chopped coarsely (skin and all)
heaps of freshly ground pepper (4 pepper medley)

Didn't want to add too many flavours so I could taste the goat.

Cooked for 5 hours on high, as we didn't shop until lunch.

Then made gravy with the cooking juices.

The meat was tender, ever so tasty, and the sinewy bit was really sticky and fall apart.

Served with baked potato, baked pumpkin, broccoli, cauliflower and peas.
