CRAZY HEAT is Coming to the Northwest

Nice Trooper, hardly ever see those around here.

Thanks, I'm a fan. It is a '98 Acura SLX (just re-badged - I liked the interior of the SLX better). I bought it as a stop-gap for some periodic towing, planning on having it just a short while then getting a 100 Land Cruiser (had one of those before -fantastic trucks). That was 10+ years ago and I still have it and like it. ;) Still see a fair number of them in the PNW. I saw a TON of them in southern Oregon on vacation last summer. planetisuzoo.com is a great resource for owners for them.

Aye carumba. Jealous of you guys with AC, we only have a window unit in the bedroom. The main floor of my house is currently 90 degrees and it is supposed to get hotter tomorrow and Monday.

New Zealand is going to be hit by a Polar Blast tomorrow, some parts of the South Island are going to be colder than Antarctica. The weather evens out somewhere in the world.

Forecasted high for my area in north Idaho (30 mi east of Spokane WA) is 108F on Monday and Tuesday next week. No AC in my house😭
Spokane is getting up to 110F. I hope this does not become the new normal. Last year we had no triple digit highs. Average for this time of the year is 76F

Definitely not a new normal...

Given the right atmospheric conditions and setup aloft between the jetstream and positioning of areas of high pressure centers and low pressure centers ...
A very + PNA pattern is a big part of what is happening here. In winter months a + PNA is usually correlated with a - NAO which is a good setup for a Gulf coast and East coast winter storm. Events like this or what happened in Texas can and do happen. And have happened for an extremely long time.

My area got the hottest I ever saw in the summer of 2010 with a high temp of 105 with a heat index nearing 120 and a dewpoint in the low 70s... We have hardly hit 100 degrees since that summer. In fact the last 3 summers have been either remarkably average or even below average temperature wise.

How's the humidity? It's 84 here all night but 100% humidity. Next 3 days: 100, 102, 98 and it's never dry here so it'll be muggy too. My car windows are fogged/wet, all paper/cardboard in the garage is damp. Nasty, nasty weather 🤢 I remember in 2004 it hit 96 which was basically unheard of at the time. Tourists have flocked here, I think each year many are surprised that it's often 15+ degrees hotter here than it ever gets in Florida.

It's very rare to get to 100 degrees with a lot of humidity which does tend to hold down temperatures a lot. Reason you don't usually see 100 degrees in Florida. I doubt that dew points are very high in the northwest during the heat wave. There's no influence from the Gulf of Mexico. The waters in the Pacific are not that warm.

Got all the windows open after midnight, including the one in the walk-out basement level. That one is really important and you can feel the cool mountain air rush into the house. At about 5:00 AM the outdoor air temp is 65 F. We’re forecast to hit 100 F today. We’ll see if the AC can bring down the indoor temp to 77 F. I’m pre-cooling the house to 72 F this morning.

As far as temp cycles … I have 30 year old plants - desert plants that normally live much longer - DEAD from the recent freeze. Many other plants/trees that froze and came back over and over - now, not coming back.

As for hot and dry ? Growing up, it was common each summer to see the ground cracked everywhere - and 3/4” wide cracks - very deep. Have not seen that in 20 years …

On Deployment to Djibouti, temps of 140F in the summer...

My sisters house in Portland Oregon, 108...

90 here in Virginia, house AC is set to 76

87F at 9 am. Looking at 114F high which is around 35 degrees above normal, and will shatter every record here by a mile.

With the heat rolling in I thought it appropriate to remind folks that wind has this lovely tendency to produce out of phase with demand. Wind in Texas is currently at 3,500MW of 30,000MW, 1,800MW of 6,000MW in California, and here are some snaps from other parts of North America and the rest of the world (because the "it's windy somewhere" narrative gets tossed out so frequently):

;)

Just remember, extreme heat and extreme cold make things act strange.

Extreme cold - metal gets brittle, tools shatter, frostbite and hypothermia can set in without warning.

Extreme heat - drink plenty of fluids, but not just water or just Gatorade. One Gatorade to 3-4 waters...
Avoid energy drinks...
Metal can flash burn your skin.
Pets need sheller and water too.
Military says 20 minutes work, 40 minutes rest...
Turn off anything you can to save power, run laundry and dishwasher at night...
Shut doors to unused rooms and closets

Anyone else got suggestions?
