I want to set up a Craigslist account, I need to start getting rid of some items that are too heavy and bulky to sell and ship on through Ebay.

Any advice or tips in general, and with the ads, i.e. what contact info to include, or not include, how to avoid scams, spam, deadbeats, etc.

Thanks

Not possible on a free site, especially CL. Its gonna happen. Use what you already know about CL and your instincts. Never to your house, always in public if possible.

Get a prepaid cell phone, magic jack, google voice etc for your contact. Don't need people calling your "main line" to harangue you later.

Take clear pictures, but not so clear you look like a professional. Be clear in your description but not to the smallest detail. Take cash only. When someone contacts you get them to agree on a time, not "in the afternoon".

You want to look like someone a buyer can knock down in price, but you want your stuff to be better than described when they show up. You want to look like "not a creep" so you, your vehicle, and your house should be at least presentable.

Mention in the ad that if the ad's still up the item's still for sale.

You don't need an account to use Craig's list. That section looks like a information gathering tool for them. List what you have within a town or county or two, from where you live. Nobody's gonna travel across the country to buy your chair. Take a few good pics of what you want to sell. Don't take them at night in the dark, in your garage. List how you want to be contacted. Putting "do not text"before and after your phone number usually means nothing to people and they will text you anyway. If your item is worth $100, ask $150.Everyone will try to beat you down in price. If you haven't sold your item in a month, drop the price a few $$$.Your ad will run for 2 days, and after that you can renew it for another 2 days, you can do that for 45 days if it doesn't sell. You can edit your post at anytime by going back to the email they first sent you. I wouldn't trust buying anything from someone that wants to meet me in a parking lot.I sell things cash and carry. No checks or money orders. If you get ridicules promises of paying you more then your asking, it's a scam. Scammers have a hard time stopping, so their number pops up alot. You can sometime google their phone number and read posts about their attempted scams.,,

I've sold furniture and used car tires of CL. I put in ALL the common ways of contact in the ad (email via CL, call or text and my cell phone written like so: 1two3-4five6-seven89)

I had plenty of deadbeats call or text with promises to come but I'd wait until they are heading out before giving out my address.

The ones who were serious, I'd ask them to call me to discuss the transaction on the phone. After hearing their voice, I'd give them the address.

I sold a bunch of stuff and never had an issue. Normal everyday people came and picked up the stuff right outta my garage with my gun and 140LB Rottwieller in plain view.

I always make them email me first via the craigslist email, otherwise you get a bunch of wackos calling your phone number or emailing you with spam. I always meet them with the item outside, never allow them inside my house or garage so they can't see what else I have. ALWAYS have them pay you cash. I did however buy a car off of CL and I/we agreed to pay using a cashiers check.

I had a lady and her son come out to buy a dinning room table and when she saw the bedroom set in the garage, she asked if its for sale as well, I said yes, and she bought both! I had another guy who was interested in the bedroom set but first come first serve.

I have nothing in the garage but my washer / drier, a shovel and 400 quarts of oil on the shelf.

Never had any wackos or spam emails. My Junk folder takes care of all that.

Open a yahoo or gmail account and communicate through that only. Then close it when you are done. Cash and carry only.

Cash is king.

Be firm in your requirements for response and times.

Clean it up, whatever it is.

Ask a reasonable price for a quick sale.

You can wear a concealed firearm on your own property without a licence. Our state is also an open carry state.

If it isn't too much trouble, meeting at an open and populated site would be a good thing.

I've bought and sold cars, tires, mowers, my Harley, and other things over CL. Never had any issues, but always prepared and ready to take care of business.

Have fun.
