My OEM windshield went 5 years without a scratch. Then one day I went for a joy ride and a rock from a truck cracked my windshield. 2 months later I find a new crack right in the middle and then I wash my truck and the glass cracks from bottom to top!
I get a new one installed 2 months ago. Awesome! Saturday night on my way home from visiting my parents I hear a lot pop and guess what? Rock strikes my new windshield right on the drivers side and cracks it! [censored]!

Sucks. Hopefully your insurance will cover it. I just had a cracked windshield a month ago. It cost $615 to replace, and unfortunately I had to pay $500 out of pocket because that's how high my deductible was. I have since lowered the deductible. Live and learn...

How many months of higher premiums to make up the difference in deduct?

None. It comes out of comprehensive, not collision, so there is no premium penalty.

However, what I found out after the fact is that for an extra $35/year, I can bring my comprehensive deductible down to $0, which I did now, so if this (broken windshield) happens again, I won't have to pay anything to have it replaced.

In some states, glass claims have no deductible, but Illinois is not one of them.

Is this your 2004 Toyota Tacoma? Are they prone to this? Wonder if certain cars are more likely to get windshield damage than others.

I had that happen more than once. I try and make it a point to get the name off the truck and plate number if the trucker is at fault. Probably nine out of ten times here in NY on the LIE, trucks are overloaded dropping stones and [censored], or missing mud flaps. I collected from the trucking companies insurance each and everytime I had a plate number. I don't back off when I'm right. Now with cell phone cameras it is even easier to take a piture of the overloaded truck, or the missing mud flap.

I had some fool bus driver crack a windshield while I was headed east in Rte 80 coming home from PA. This jerk was speeding in a blizzard and tossed [censored] from the left lane to the center lane and busted my window. I got the number off the bus and raised [censored], a week later the check was in the mail for my windshield.

My Saturn has its original windshield and I do lots of highway driving. Plenty of pebbles have hit it hard and never a chip or crack. K've been lucky. I know people who go through a windshield every year or two.

I was wondering this myself. The windshields on the Japanese imports I own (Acura and Toyota) both get nasty chipped and cracked windshields pretty easy.

Seems that the rocks just bounce off the Chevy windshields.

Not sure cause it did go 5 years without a chip...
I only have the bare coverage on my insurance. The glass shop I used is a local company and I was only charge $133. The glass is perfect without any distortions and the gasket looks to be the same size as Toyota's. Stark contrast from safelite I used for my Cavilar I use to have. $240 and the glass was distorted from one side to the other and the gasket was huge and ugly!

Yeah, OE gaskets and PPG or other American made (or Euro/Japanese) glass is key.

The Mexican garbage that some places try to push on you isnt worth looking through...

I've had several windshields replaced due to rock hits. State Farm must really not like me. They pay 100% for auto glass and installation.

This is not common. The insurance premium (including the additional amount you pay for collision protection) is typically variable depending on your deductible. The $35/year surcharge for a $0 deductible is a bit in that direction, and seemingly a no-brainer given the option.

Is your insurance company different from most, or is there some type of law in Illinios that governs this? If the premium for a $100 deductible was the same as the premium for a $1,000 deductible, everyone would pick the $100 option.

back in the dark ages. my dad lived about 15 miles away. one short section of road ( 2 lane ) had open field on both sides. one time on the road i got a small stone on the windshield. a month later, going the other way, same road, same truck same rock bang into windshield. then 10 years later same road a drunk wiped my dads 1967 dodge charger, totaled out. true story, mostly. some of the dump truck in wichita have have signs saying they are not responsible for windshield cracks. i havent heard if that will hold up in court.
