"Oil Consumption

Percentage of members reporting adding at least a quart of oil between oil changes, by engine type."

Notice the basic trend for the most part is that the newer the car, the less reports of adding oil. I'd like to see the avg mileage of the cars for each model year.

Looks like mileage on the vehicle is a strong corresponding factor. Gunked up oil ring pack? ... or maybe worn rings perhaps? Must be that low HTHS oil, lol. ;)

If your platform consumes oil, it makes no difference what viscosity/HTHS the mfcr recommends.
To clarify, the comment I made about HTHS was along the lines that maybe too low HTHS (due to whatever factors - too thin oil grade, dilution, excessive shearing on top of that) caused more wear to rings over the long run, and maybe that's why the older the car, the more reports of having to add oil.

Hey Z, I wasn't responding to your comment although I can see why you'd think I was. Your point is a germane one.

I'm reading that chart differently - oil consumption was at that time, not now so for example, '11 Audis with the 2.0 FSI engine consumed oil at that time....if any are still left that weren't fixed I'd suppose they consume a lot now! 🤣 🤣 🤣

Regarding this reference, what I see is that older vehicles are consuming more oil and wouldn’t that be expected? I know that we here cringe at any oil consumption but using a bigger representation like CR has done shows what I would expect. The finer points are missing like how many miles on the engines, how were they driven and maintained, etc.

Looks more like a survey done at one point in time instead of separate surveys done each year when the cars were new at the time. The CR article has a link that shows a similar CR survey was done before in 2014. Again, the oil use is more with the older cars because they are older. Guess this is more like a "how does the oil consumption go up on these cars as they rack up the miles" study.

I guess VAG and BMWG forgot that the cars are supposed to burn petrol not oil..
