Went to Autozone to dump a few gallons of used oil and saw 3 5-quart jugs of black bottle syntec 0w40 European vehicle on a clearance table for $10 each. Took all 3 because I'm a sucker for a good deal haha! I've been running 5w20 in my 96 civic but this should do just fine I would imagine. Right? Only other car I could think to use it in would be the Corolla but it specs 0w20 and that's what I use in it. Thoughts on using it in the Civic? Spec was 5w30 but has been updated to allow 5w20.

Wouldn't run it in the boat or the bike, and not the yota ( assuming the warranty), otherwise anything you got can use it

+1.....I agree that an 0w40 oil is just not the best for your Civic. It might be a good buy, but not for the Civic. Go back to 5w20 or even 0w20. I think the engine builder know whats best for that engine.

Yeah, he's going to need a BMW or a Mercedes.

He could always do a mix of the 0w20 with the 0w40.

Have to agree.

The OP could post the 0W-40 in the For Sale section at 15-20 bucks per jug and make a profit while still giving some Castrol 0W-40 users a good deal.

Like a 96 Civic could give a damm what you put in it. You guys are too much. The OP lives in California, he could run 20W-50 with no problem.

Sure oil is oil right?
So if he doesn't mind the drop in power and an increase in fuel consumption I agree it's not a big deal.
But the fact is, the cheapest 5W-20 dino he can find would be a better lubricant choice and $10/jug dino is not hard to find.

Admitting that a caterham-like blend, maybe 1 quart black bottle 0w-20 Edge thrown in with 2 or 3 quarts of the awesome 0w-40, would be better.
Over the OCI, topping off occasionally with Gumout or Seafoam would thin it slightly too. It shouldn't need much thinning for an old Civic's bearings.

You will have reduced fuel economy due to the 40 weight oil use. Not huge but reduced nonetheless.

In combined driving of my '10 Civic on 10W40 the mileage decreased 10% vs. running 5W20.

I'm in California, I'm doing a favor taking these heavy Castrol Edge 0W40 off your hand for what you paid, if you live in Orange County. This heavy oil is not good for your cars but it's okay for my E430 and S2000, so it will benefit both of us.

It's gonna be huge, trust me, I couldn't resist the lure of GC elixir and lost 3~4mpg in my '02 Civic Si, which calls for 5W20. The engine became so sluggish, I had to really step on it just to get going from light to light, I dumped the oil after few hundred miles of use.

Hmm well I suppose I can give it a shot in the Civic. It will probably be just fine. It would probably be fine in the Corolla too, but that's been on 0w20 synthetic since day 1 so I'll stick with what's working in that.
