If it's a chunk of metal gouged out of the wheel, I find it sort of hard to believe they caused it.

what makes you say that? I find it entirely believable. only takes one tard with a bead breaker.

due to oxidation you should be able to tell if its fresh or not also.

Doesn't even take that: I wonder if they simply DROPPED it!

In the future, I'm going to start taking pics of every wheel before I go in. I've had them crack plastic lug caps, chip paint, etc. Luckily for you, it happened at Costco. If anyone takes care of their customers, Costco does. I don't know about their tire dept (never used them), but their merchandise customer service can't be beat.

Just wanted to give an update to my OP. A pleasant lady from Costco headquarters called me on Monday night. She stated that she and a coworker who was very familiar with tire mounting machines looked over the pictures that Costco had sent her. They determined that the gouge on the wheel was caused by their machine. Apparently there is a piece that rests on that area of the wheel during tire removal/install. She stated that the machine normally has a hard plastic or rubber "bumper" that protects the wheel from damage. Apparently there's was either damaged or missing.
She stated that they ordered a new GM wheel and will have it shipped to the shop. Should be able to get it done on Thursday or Friday. Tom

I always go there for my tires...once in a while the techs give u attitude but they are usually very friendly...cant beat their coupons and free rotations either...

Word to the wise! Always inspect your vehicle before leaving whenever maint. has been performed.

Yep.....this is why I always pop the hood, and inspect my car before I move it from their parking spot......cause once you are off their property, they can claim the damage was pre-existing.....

A similar story that happened some time ago...
A young lady that my wife had worked with, had 4 - 16" tires installed on her '95ish Mitsu Eclips TURBO, at PepBoys. The tire installer had put scratches in all 4 wheels during the dismounting/mounting of the old/new tires. Long story short...

The young lady, although she paid for the 4 tires/PKG at the time of installation, PB's Management reimbursed her enough money(in a check) to pay for the cost of 4 new 16" Mitsubishi Eclips Wheels.

Which in turn, more than covered the cost of the new tires/PKG and then SOME! And, she never did replaced the wheels, as they really weren't that badly scratched. But, a claim is a claim and PB's made good on it!
