I don't know. I doubt with the state of the economy that they are worried about dumping money into a car program that they won't make money on. Maybe in better times.
I don't think Ford can make money on cars like that. They built the GT but at more money than the $$ and the high powered Mustangs were passed off to Shelby.
Passed off to Shelby? Ford manufactures them and puts Carol's name on them.
The Ford GT was limited production and never designed to be a money maker. GM does not make a lot of money (if any) on the 'vette either. It is a testing ground for new technologies and the flagship product for GM, like Ford's (flagship product) is the Mustang.
The basic Mustangs are built at Flat Rock but all the additional mods and Shelby parts are done in Las Vegas at the Shelby facility. Similar to the way the original Shelby Mustangs were constructed. The volume is too small to just run them down the line to completion.
The Ford GT's weren't built 100% by the normal manufacturing plants either.

Because of the Ford GT's low volume requirements and unique modular aluminum body construction, the Ford GT assmbly begins at Novi, MI with final work at Wixom's prototype build center located on the grounds of Wixom Assembly. It is not integrated into the assembly line process at the plant.
