Corvette ZR1 oil recommendation?

For warranty reason, he should stick with only oils in the GM 4718M list, and it does not include Mobil 1 0W40. After warranty had been expired, then Mobil 1 0W40 is a good choice for light track use.

I know much more than you think I do.

Sorry if I offended you in some way. Judging by your signature I'm not surprised that you would jump at a chance to defend XM.

That IS a supercharger but NOT one off the ZR1.

Here is a link to the photo of the ZR1 motor.

Proves what a nice pushrod, 2 valve, V8 can do!

And marketing at its best on the cap of the Vette in the photo.

That's an aftermarket Vortech supercharger on an LS2 Corvette, which is centrifugal (has an impeller similar to a turbocharger). The ZR-1's LS9 engine uses a 4 lobe TVS Eaton positive displacement supercharger that's mounted directly to the cylinder heads in it's own manifold.

yes, i know it is not a ZR1 but it was the quickest pic i could find of a corvette engine with the Mobil 1 fill cap that was actually readable.

The owner's manual specifically says to ONLY use 5w30. Here is what the 2010 ZR1 manual says:

What Kind of Engine Oil to Use:

Look for three things:

* GM4718M
* SAE 5w30

SAE 5w30 is best for the vehicle. These numbers on an oil container show it's viscosity, or thickness. Do not use other viscosity oils such as SAE 20w50.

* API Starburst symbol

Not offended at all. And my use of Mobil 1 oils has nothing to do with the fact that many oil companies work with engine builders with R&D, not just XM. That's common knowledge as Doug has pointed out many times.

If it were me, I'd switch to the Mobil 1 0w30 variant. Which I believe also carries the GM spec. It's widely speculated to carry better basestocks. But that's just me. If you had to stick to 5w30 (I know you think it says you do, but I somehow doubt 0w or 10w in the same weight would void a warranty) I'd switch to PP or SynPower. Just not a fan of vanilla Mobil 1 5w30. At all.

If you're going to deviate from the recommended 5w30 why not go with Mobil 1 0W-20 as it also meets the 4718M spec'.

I don't know if the ZR1 has an oil pressure gauge but that's the only way to know firstly where you're at with the Mobil 1 5w30, both on the street and on the track. Depending on how far above the spec' minimum you are, under street and track conditions, then you can make an informed decision on whether to go lighter or heavier. Loafing around on the street I wouldn't be surprised if you could run Mobil 1's 0W-20.

I would install oil temp gauge if it's not in the car already, if the oil temp is rarely above 210-220F then Mobil 1 0W20 may be the better oil.

I can't believe there are so many recommendations here. The car is under warranty, so the only recommendation should be to stick with the GM spec. They don't leave much room for ambiguity.

I mean... Brand new car, Developed hand in hand with Mobil, and they say Mobil 1 5w30 is good enough.

I know this is BITOG, but come on!! Its a Brand new CAR!!

Seems "Vanilla" M1 (never heard this term) is all that is required for the car's whole life.

Can it be that simple.

An oil temp' gauge is great but it's icing on the cake so to speak.
Oil pressure is the bottom line. Viscosity loss and therefore reduced oil pressure can be due to more than high oil temps, but also shear and fuel dilution which a temp gauge alone won't indicate.

(You need to quit your day job telling jokes like that!)

Please list the links (not marketing but ACTUAL data) listing that Mobil "hand in hand" developed the Corvette ZR1.... Either the body or engine...

Make sure you post them here.

Guys, there are a ton of oils that meet the Corvette 4718M spec', so there's plenty of material for BITOG'ers to ponder.

Vanilla M1 should be "Plain Vanilla" no? Of course we all know that's a vailed reference to the basic 5w30.

One thing about the ZR1 which is really cool, and my fellow oil nuts will love, is the fact that it's got a dry sump oiling system that holds 10.5 quarts of oil! This system is also available on the Z06 models, and all manual transmission equipped Grand Sport models too!

I'd go with Mobil 1 0w30 or 5w30 largely based on price and that's it's available at Walmart for $21 a jug. Pennzoil Ultra 5w30 would also be a strong consideration.
