It's called GM and Exxon/Mobil being in "good ol' boy" bed together. It has nothing to do with Mobil 1 5w30 being the best oil for this application, nor did the engineers have anything to do with spec'ing it for the ZR1.
Personally I would go with Pennzoil Ultra or Platinum 10w30 based on the used oil analysis results I've been seeing lately. They have been looking much better than anything Mobil has to offer at the moment. The reason I would go 10w30 over the 5w30 is because you're in Florida. The 5w30 would offer no benefit for you in that climate.
Lastly, that's an absolutely killer ride. Great choice taking it in black. Thanks for sharing the pictures.
It may SEEM like GM is in bed with Mobil 1...however I've personally spoken to 2 GM powertrain reps (whom I work with) that claim Mobil was partially involved in some engine design, meaning they gave GM what they wanted in a motor oil formula. This is no different than when GoodYear was involved in Corvette design and they provided a tire that GM wanted to meet their specs.
Not saying I fully believe these guys, but what if??
biodiesel doesn't know what he speaks of. Doug Hillary has often mentioned he has first hand knowledge of oil companies working with engine designers to produce oils for new engines. Shell, XM, Castrol, etc.
Thanks, Tig!
