Corvette ZR1 oil recommendation?

+2 on Pennzoil Platinum or Pennzoil Ultra 5w30. But, any approved oil will do including the M1 it came with.

Nice car BTW.

Ferrari and Porsche killer and made in the USA. Doesn't get any better than that.

Use the stuff the engineers recommend.

On the plus side, if you keep using Mobil 1 0W30, all the iron going out in the oil will eventually lighten the car up a bit. Lighter is faster!

:)

Nice car, I like seeing them at the track. Hopefully you can make it out to a nice road course and enjoy the car!

The engineers may have spec'ed 5w30, but they didn't spec M1 for the car. The MBAs did. It's just the one on the engineer's list whose company made the most advantageous deal with GM. If you think otherwise, then I've got some pristine beachfront land in New Orleans you might be interested in buying.

This is coming from someone who worshipped at the bottle of M1 for 25+ years. GC is better than M1 in my LS1 in just about every category. Better pressure, almost no consumption, and much less valve train noise. I switched over right about the time the car went out of warranty.

Now as to M6 transmission fluid, the Mobil synthetic ATF can't be beat.

while they may not specify that you HAVE to run Mobil 1, they do highly suggest it. Look on the oil fill cap.

That's an aftermarket Vortech supercharger on an LS2 Corvette, which is centrifugal (has an impeller similar to a turbocharger). The ZR-1's LS9 engine uses a 4 lobe TVS Eaton positive displacement supercharger that's mounted directly to the cylinder heads in it's own manifold.

I've used Mobil 1, as came from the factory, since new in 1994 in my Admiral Blue Corvette. used oil analysis great, car runs great - no problems. Stick with what it came with.

Mobil 1 is a fine choice and is readily available.

If you want to step up, maybe consider one of the group 4 or group 5 oils like Red Line, Amsoil, Motul, etc.

And if you're "green" maybe some Renewable Lubricants oil.

It's called GM and Exxon/Mobil being in "good ol' boy" bed together. It has nothing to do with Mobil 1 5w30 being the best oil for this application, nor did the engineers have anything to do with spec'ing it for the ZR1.

Personally I would go with Pennzoil Ultra or Platinum 10w30 based on the used oil analysis results I've been seeing lately. They have been looking much better than anything Mobil has to offer at the moment. The reason I would go 10w30 over the 5w30 is because you're in Florida. The 5w30 would offer no benefit for you in that climate.

Lastly, that's an absolutely killer ride. Great choice taking it in black. Thanks for sharing the pictures.

I would follow the mfgs recommended fluids etc during warranty periods. The oil choice will not make a big enough difference in engine life to worry about.

It may SEEM like GM is in bed with Mobil 1...however I've personally spoken to 2 GM powertrain reps (whom I work with) that claim Mobil was partially involved in some engine design, meaning they gave GM what they wanted in a motor oil formula. This is no different than when GoodYear was involved in Corvette design and they provided a tire that GM wanted to meet their specs.

Not saying I fully believe these guys, but what if??

Nice ride. Just took a tour of the factory and museum a few weeks ago and got the fever. I think the new Pennzoil Ultra would be hard to beat for a spec oil.

WICKED car! If I had to choose an oil off the GM list for warranty purposes,I`d go with the thickest weight allowed (10W30) and Pennzoil Platinum.

biodiesel doesn't know what he speaks of. Doug Hillary has often mentioned he has first hand knowledge of oil companies working with engine designers to produce oils for new engines. Shell, XM, Castrol, etc.
