Is it Mercon "Vee" or Mercon "Five"?

If it's "five", then what happened to Mercons I, II, III, and IV?

...and if it's "vee", then what does it stand for?

(No, I don't have anything better to do today...

I'm guessing, but perhaps they don't want people to erroneously assume Mercon and Dexron are synonymous... as in the old Dexron/Mercon fluid we're so familiar with. Dexron had a short-lived IV formulation, skipped the V designation for Mercon's sake, and went straight to VI.

Mercon skipped II, III, and IV, and went to V. So yeah, it's five.

abplus, Ford came out with the mercon V specification to address transmission "shudder".
In 2006, they back specifed Mercon V for Mercon applications, which is why most ATF that lists Mercon V on the label will also say that it is for Mercon applications.

The biggest difference is that Mercon V uses a syn or semi syn base oil (probably group III) along with a higher level of friction modifier. The better base oil from what I have heard also is a slight multi viscosity oil (higher viscosity index).

But it is all academic now as Ford has now specified Mercon V to be use in all instances that Mercon was originally specified.
