Coolant drip?

Hope you’re all well.

Was under the car (2004 Corolla) and noticed a little bit of coolant dripping, (first photo). I cleaned it up and didn’t see anything from the water pump.

I turned the car on and brought it up to temp, then the leak stopped and it was clear, no drip. Again nothing that I could see from the water pump. Any suggestions?

I'd take it to the car wash that has an underside spray. I bought a metal drip pan and painted it white with epoxy paint. This has helped with finding drips and leaks.

All good suggestions. The coolant reservoir is okay. It’s dripping from above the oil pan, and running along it then hits the ground. The hell can it be? And I have a road trip tomorrow. Think I’ll rent a car…

It may have been dripping for a while and you’ve just now noticed. Buy a jug of coolant and take it on your trip. No need to rent a car.

It could be the weep hole from the water pump, which means a seal is going. The trip is 2hr + it’s the long weekend, and I’m the type to mitigate risks where I can. Trust me if it was just a local trip, I’d push my luck.
Clean it up, drive it, and check frequently to see where the leak starts.
Yeah, I’ll do that when I get back and drive around locally. My hunch is that it’s the weep hole on the water pump.

All cars come from the factory with coolant stop leak. Once the fluid has been changed, you remove the stop leak. It is worth a shot to put it in but you need to find out if that is coming from the water pump weep hole first. That weep hole drip would be your indication that your water pump needs to be replaced. Any chain store type repair shop can throw it up on a lift and tell you really fast.

Really?

All cars come with stop leak?

Do tell…

I know this is more worrisome than oil. This is coming from someone who bought a 10 yo LS430 and found zero coolant in the reservoir and radiator to be seen.

100% with this vehicle it was evaporation over 10 years.

One never knows—could your coolant have been from a service, just splashed down there? Main thing if it doesn’t come back don’t worry. If reservoir is low then worth follow up.

But I get it. Water anywhere (house, driveway, etc) does get my attention…good luck.

I would never use stop leak. Did it on a B27F Volvo, I was young. Bad results

I do recall in the late 90s that Subaru and Nissan both had a factory additive that was essentially a light stop-leak dose. This was a time when the engines always smelled like coolant when hot but no leaks were found. It was eventually attributed to metal porosity, and the light dose of stop-leak would treat it nicely.

Now, stop leak has gotten chunkier since then, so idk if it’s the same thing now as it was then.

I half-dosed my ‘97 as the oem stop leak became a TSB after I bought it. The smell was solved. Did the same in the v6 Nissan and the smell went away from it as well.

Never heard of this before.

Yeah, exactly. I will try taking it to the my mechanic sooner than later.

Truly, it is. Oddly enough, I placed white cardboard under the car and I no longer see any coolant drip marks. . . I will keep an eye on it for a few more days. Last time I changed the water pump was 7 years ago, not sure what brand of pump it was as the mech did it.

Corolla has the coolant evap effect as well.

I did open the radiator cap up, some did drip down, but not that much. It COULD be that but I do not want to risk the biscuit. However, before that, I was under the car and I saw fresh coolant streaks, even though I cleaned them last oil change.

Eyes are on this, thank you.

Same here, always something to look into and follow up on.

I am against this as well, it's a temp solution not a permanent one.

Took some pics today. I didn’t see any coolant drops today… strange.

But saw this in the engine bay, behind the alternator.

I had great luck with K-Seal on a CRV with a cracked thermostat housing. Sealed the leak until I could order the parts and disassemble the car (its built around the thermostat). Gotta locate the leak first though, as it won't do much to seal a water pump leak.
