Is the universal ATF (non synthetic) much higher quality compared to a dexron/mercon rated conventional fluid thats about a dollar cheaper? I'm looking for a cheaper alternative to my Amsoil ATF, Thats readilly available. This is going in my 91 Pathfinder's transmission and transfer case with 160K miles..thanks for any input.

For your ol' Pathfinder, because of the mileage, I wouldn't splurge on a boutique fluid. I would use a high-mileage ATF. Pennzoil, Maxlife, Castrol, Supertech.... are some available. And, I wouldn't worry about the basestocks.

I'm going to run amsoil ATF base on the severe service interval of 50k miles..I have added a external spin on oil filter and external transmission cooler as well.

Amsoil ATF user here, 15 years best ATF I ever used.
working at a transmission shop taught me dont go cheap on ATF choice. I know it is good if every trans shop wont sell it to their customers.
