I think I see where you are going. If you are trying to say that driving a fun, responsive, athletic, capable car that operates as a natural extension of the driver, you are describing what I like to drive.

I find many of today's cars so numb, and unresponsive I can't stand driving them. From throttle by wire systems that don't go when you stab the gas, and don't stop going when you lift, to cars that understeer with authority when asked to negotiate a corner at any speed.

However, I drive a Honda and I love it. It's a turbocharged, 407HP, S2000. The top is down all year long, it's as responsive a car as I've ever driven, and it runs 11.27 in the quarter. It's seriously fun.

The only possible upgrade is a 'vette or exotic. Neither of which I can afford.

Yeah. I say, give me somethin' that says, 'I get up every morning at 5:30 and commute for an hour and a half to some [censored] job where my jag-off boss expects me to kiss his [censored] all day just so I can afford to keep my ungrateful, screaming kids decked out in Dora the explorer [censored] and my wife up to her fat [censored] in self-help videos until the day I get up the courage to put a shotgun in my mouth.'

I almost choked on my chicken noodle soup...lol

For narrow winding mountain roads Corvette is too big and not as responsive as S2000. I had no problem tailing a new Z06 on CA-74 highway to lake Elsinor in So Cal, even I didn't try hard and I didn't have to brake to slow down the S2000 on very tight curves while the Z06 had to brake(I kept a distance of about 5-6 cars to be safe), at the end of the curve I was at the Vette's bumper.

After the tight curves the Vette accelerated very fast, with much less power in stock form the S2000 could not keep up. That is the limit of a 2.2L 4-cyl normally aspirated piston engine, even it is one of the best small 4-cyl normally aspirated piston engines in the world it can't compete with a 5+ liters V8.

Don't understand how Honda Odyssey made the list either. For Gen 2 Odyssey, everyone I know at work with this vehicle had a transmission failure and needed a rebuild or dumped it before 100,000k. Mine too. Only one of many problems with this vehicle. Maintained better than the book.

CR'S title says "Best cars for making it to 200,000 miles 10 models most likely to run for the long haul"

With this wording, cars on this list could make it to 200,000 miles even suffering expensive breakdowns.

Do any of these cars use direct injection in their engines? I am not sure, but I wonder if being more old school but proven powertrains help give them an edge in durability? My old beater Camry has not been trouble free since we bought it with 83k on it 16 years ago, but it has been more nuisance little things than major problems. Today, it is still a good commuter car doing it's job well.

I've had 3 Chevys, 1 Olds and a Pontiac all go past 200k with little problems too, and that 1 Chevy went over 330k. I wish domestics could have been noted too, but when it comes down to just an easy driving, no worries kind of car, the Camry is pretty close to being my all time favorite "appliance".

LOL,very funny, although I suspect more than a few atx bmw's are leased by such individuals as well.
What cars do you recommend then, to help me save my shotgun for the deer.
One needs to seat 7 and tow 5k, the other get reasonable mileage and not have too many $500 parts as it ages.

Didn't any of you guys see "We're the Millers" with Jennifer Aniston? The drug dealer is describing the kind of haircut he wants to pass as a Suburbanite. This is a quote from that movie.

Nothing in your signature. And its not just Toyota and Honda I take issue with. The thread starter was asking for what we think.

I think life is too short to buy any car Consumer Reports recommends.

Not a very good answer, so I'll try again.
How would you define what you term to be a real car?

That's entirely subjective, but I'll put my domestics against anything by a foreign manufacturer. Too many buy into the foreign is better myth because of CR. They are obviously biased. No question in my mind. The Dodge in my sig has been the most reliable car I have ever owned. Five year old car with zero issues.

That movie was hilarious. I've actually watched it twice it's so good.
I may agree with you on that but the brand new Accords are also great cars. I would love a new Sport. It's so pretty.

CR Mag isn't saying that most/any vehicle CAN'T make it to 200k miles, they just reporting on vehicles that make it to 200K more easily with fewer repairs along the way and/or lower cost doing so, overall...according to a survey!

All vehicles can make it 200k miles.
It's about the repair cost of getting to that 200K miles is where Honda and Toyota shine.

More importantly Americans do as evidenced by the top selling vehicles besides large trucks. People put way too much weight into Consumer Reports and believe it is an actual reason Japanese makers are successful.

Do you think the Japanese car making industry funded consumer reports secretly to get them where they are today. Or did they actually produce appealing vehicles to the masses that tend to be decently reliable?

Look at compact/small cars across the domestic lines. They all(Dart, Focus,Cruze) imported the engineering/designs as they simply could not for the life of them to produce a top tier car that was competitive.

So is there a break down of what type of cars each subscriber has? I mean is it an equal number? Again what is the definition of a repair or maintenance when CR ask?

I would have liked to see this list include trucks to see how they stack up. My understanding is that if trucks are included they would take the top spots.

Given that all those cars in that list are typically purchased by older, frugal, value-conscious people, and they likely don't drive them that hard, I see why they make it to 200,000 miles more often.

Honda is a pretty good driver's car, but Toyota has long had marshmallow steering (compared to a BMW for example).

an equnox can only go about 30k on a timming chain. how can you expect it to make it to 200k ? good luck on the gas thinned oil from the pos direct injection. another winner from gm
