Consensus on Mobil Delvac 1

Some of the newer products like Mobil Delvac are low in Zinc, making them allegedly unsuitable for classic cars. Delvac 1300 Syn blend is CK-4|SP rated. Even in 15w40.

VR1 has been reformulated to include classic cars, and exceeds SL service rating. In other words it is a street oil now, aswell as a racing oil.

ST does look good on paper, so it will be my second test.
We use a lot of Swepco 306 at my friend's shop in classic cars and older trucks and equipment. It uses an older style add pack with high calcium, zinc and phosphorus. It includes Swepco's Dimonyl additive, which I am unsure of what it is. Doesn't seem to be picked up by spectrograph. All I know is the stuff is very slippery and has a sweet odor to it. It doesn't smell like oil.

The Super Tech synthetic 15w40 looks good on paper. $15.84/gallon locally. The truth is pretty much any hdeo is more than adequate for just about anything....but this forum wouldn't exist if we just accepted that 😄
True but modern ck4 15w-40 with a Volvo vds 4.5 rating is already loads better than what the engineers had in mind for when the 5.3 first debuted in 1999 which was just plain old conventional 5w-30. But supertech 15w-40 Is what I usually buy loads off, that sounds like the new full synthetic that's $15 instead of the $12 variant. I recently bought 5 gals of mag1 15w-40 on sale on Lowe's website and it's highlinewarren's main brand which also supplies Walmart with their super tech oils so I expect it to be the same performance wise.

Sounds like some odd stuff. Had no idea motor oil could ever smell sweet.

The only Delvac that is low phosphorus is the 1300 line and ESP in 5w30.

Delvac MX, Exteme and ESP in 5w40 have phosphorus > 1000 ppm.

What is your test for slipperiness?

I like the ESP in 5w40 flavor as well as in 5w30 and 0w30. I use the last two in my Bluetec and the first one in the RAM. No complaints.

The API SN and newer limits on phosphorous (not zinc) only apply to xW-30 grades and below.

This was CK\SN Napa 15w40 within a month or so. My point was, they are all not having 12-1400 ppm like they did before on the regular..... ZDDP. Further, doe Phosphorus not really do the work?

Yes, phosphorous is the anti-wear component of the compound, zinc is there just to make it play nice basically.

And no, you can't assume just because phosphorous is unlimited in a specific grade that there is going to be lots of it, but it being SN/SN+/SP isn't the reason if it's an xW-40 or above, hence M1 FS 0W-40 having 930ppm of phosphorous and being API SP, and SuperCar 5W-50, also SP, having 1,100ppm.

On the diesel front, M1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5W-40 has 1,100PPM of phosphorous and is API SN/CK-4.

Right, I agree, (for what that is worth) and that was my original point to @Kennedy01

Also, to your comment of x30 grade and below..........could the same base oils and additive packages be used to make a 30wt and 40 wt? If the blender uses the same juice for 30 and 40 wt, that would make sense to the "low" levels.

I mean, yeah, conceivably, they could just use more VII, but generally the heavier narrow spread oils like 15W-40 use heavier really cheap base oils that don't work for like say a 5W-30. Even if we are talking a 10W-30, you can see below that you need Group III (unless you are using XOM's GII+, but in different portions from the 15W-40) than for the 15W-40, which can blended with straight Group I (AP/CORE).

I've concluded that if I change the oil I'm using from Swepco 306 I'll probably be trying the Delvac Extreme 15w40 instead of the Delvac 1. I appreciate all the replies and information.

If I didn’t have half basemen stash of oil I’d look into that. Currently I have the Providence 10w30 for the Dakota after T5 rotella is used up.
Delvac in whatever flavor seems to be a gold standard in HDMO. I recently changed my oil in a 6.2 Gm diesel to the 15w40 Delvac 1300 Synblend, and it is running very smooth. Perhaps a bit quieter than the Napa 15w40 it replaced. Probably not true, just an observation, it is a bit colder temp outside now also.
