Go for it then...drop the tank. The strainer itself should be from 6-12 dollars.

If you're not doing it yourself, it's a waste of money to pay some shop gobs of money to do it every 15-20K when it's not really necessary.

Back to another question you had...a strainer does trap particles/contaminants. Why would you want to "knock them free""? Wouldn't that be defeating the purpose? It sounds like you are set on replacing the strainer.
 
I don't want to knock the particles free...I just feel that they need to be removed. Maybe I'm not understanding the system. Once the filter/strainer is full how does the fuel get by? Is there a valve that lets the fuel pass without filtering? I guess I'm just concerned about what stuff finds it's way into the engine and I find it hard to believe that automakers don't want to filter the fuel. What happens if you never change the fuel filter on an older vehicle?

Trust me...I don't want to drop the fuel tank to change a strainer in the tank. I'm just trying to understand how the new system works.
 
The strainer is like a sock to make sure the fuel pump does not suck up any particles that could jam it. If you change the fuel pump then of course you change the strainer. The strainer really does not hold anything, so when the engine is stopped, most of the particles may just drift back into the tank.

Forget about the strainer unless you are dropping the tank for another reason.

The real complaint is why your vehicle does not have a normal fuel filter.

That's right...a lot of new GM cars don't have a normal fuel filter. Seems like they are designing cars to last only for a finite period of time. This really sucks for people who want to keep their car for a long time.
 
I find it difficult to believe that our fuel is not filtered down to 5u or so. The reason being is that fuel injectors are very sensitive to dirt. I have seen my local Texaco station changing their fuel filters and on the side was printed 5u. I look at the factory manual for my Mazda CX 7 and they show a can type filter mounted on the in-tank fuel pump.

I certainly have not looked at all vehicles, however the few I have changed the fuel pump on had only a strainer before the fuel pump. To me it makes no sense to place a filter between the pump and the injectors INSIDE the fuel tank. Maybe if the fuel tank has an access panel its not to bad, but to have to drop the tank is a real pain and can be expensive if some of the fittings are rusted and snap.
 
I can't address other car designes but, my Subaru had an access door so you could get to the top of the fuel tank. Three screws and remove the fuel pump assembly-a 10 minute job). The requirement to drop a fuel tank to get to a pump or filter sure sounds like a save-a-penny idea for an economy car doesn't it? I have read that some injectors have a fuel filter built into the injector housing. Anyone familiar with this?
 
Most cars are not 'filtered' these days because most gas tanks are plastic and don't rust like normal metal tanks did, thus no reason for a fine filter, also since, like "Eddie" posted, he has seen his Texaco station changed filters on the pump. So the gas is normally filtered their anyhow. then for the last reason, $$$$ savings by less parts added to the system.
 
In my car the fuel pump brushes are the main source of dirt. They must have took those out of the fuel flow or the injectors would be dead within 1000 miles.

Maybe a filter can be added.
