Ideally you'd have a compact wagon... Then you'd get compact sedan benefits with CRV/RAV4 SUV type cargo space.
For longer family trips we do tend to use the Outback more than the Focus, its just a bit bigger, quieter, and nicer inside. If its just my boys and I going skiing or biking somewhere though, we usually take the Focus. Usually I'll carry one of the kids bikes in the back and 2 or 3 bikes on the rack.
