Because at least most things in metric fit with each other without having to add arbitrary numbers which lead people to believe that "torque = hp at 5252 RPM"...a litre of water is a Kg, and is 10cm cubed...1,000 of them is a tonne, which is 1m cubed.

I'm ambidextrous for the most part.. but 62 lb/cubic foot is a rote learning rather than intuitive system.

more common in europe, though. much more fuel friendly than idling, and more effective than electric.


They're pretty common in NA as well, but among long haul truck owners and heavy equipment. Europe is the same. People with small passenger vehicles don't even know these things exist, just like here. These things cannot be installed below $2,000, so I will keep idling my car as needed.

Too bad you couldn't get a smaller ~1000watt equivalent heater like this, less than an hour at extreme low temps would be plenty to get the engine nice and warm.

Oddly enough, and somewhat OT, my city has a rule on the issue. There is a city bylaw that states if one is idling a vehicle that is unattended, the parking brake must be engaged. That's about as far as they go.

The same reason we changed up here: Standardization. And we didn't have to turn in our guns to make the change either, LOL!

And the problem is you have a partial adoption because much of your industry has had to change to Metric because the rest of the world did. That's why car parts are metric and use metric fasteners.

And as Shannow pointed out, metric is a lot easier for kids to learn. With Celsius water freezes at 0 and boils at 100. Pretty logical and easy to remember. Fahrenheit seems so awkward to me, LOL!

The metric system is inferior to base 12 or base 16. 10 is only divisible by 1, 2, and 5.

12 is divisible by 1,2,3,4,6.

The only advantage to base 10 is for people that must count on their fingers.

We would be better off if we had 12 fingers.

Thats why there are mm, cm, dm, m, km, etc. Also, mL, dL, L (liter) etc, base 10's its much easier and strsight forward, and more easily scalable.

The point of the metric system is that every unit is either a multiplication or division by 10, 100, 1000, etc. of the base unit. That is why it's ability to be divided by 1,2,3,4,6 is irrelevant.

It only seems that way because you have 10 fingers. There is no other logical reasoning why 10 should be the essential end of the row and starting over point. It is funny how human minds work.

If 12 were the base for the number system we would still have the ability to divide by 10, 100, 1000, etc. Nothing would be lost there.

I suppose it is covered, however it isn't taught in a sense that students are required to learn and understand it at the elementary or secondary level. College is different as students who chose fields that require a true knowledge of the system have chosen to learn the system and are paying to do so.
 
I used to warm up rental cars by smashing the brake and accelerator at the same time.

Power braking.

I do it to my vehicles sometimes but go a bit easier maybe 2k rpm against the converter.

That's really all that is needed, the cars are designed to deal with the weather.

Takes about 15 seconds for the ridiculously fast idle in our new 6.0 fleet vans to settle down, then off we go. Just take it easy till the needle comes up.

The coolant management is exceptional on the new VVT engines in our fleet. They have much more volume, almost 2 gallons, than stock due to a large heat exchanger, yet the warm up is greatly reduced...
 
Steve, I would assume the 'more' volume would be in the radiator? Not necessarily in the block circulating at engine startup?
