Cold Weather And EV's

What does the Plaid give you a Camry doesnt? The typical answer is "its fast man". The camry is also more than fast enough to cost you your license.
It’s a lot less funny to put a “Friends of Coal” license plate on a Camry, something I would absolutely do with a Plaid or any other EV.

Also what about apartment dwellers in crowded urban areas? It really is not going to work there at all. Imagine this in NYC, a real nightmare.
This is why battery powered cars are just a stepping stone, it's a trip backwards in time and a major inconvenience to a significant portion of the population. Battery powered cars will never penetrate more than 30% of the vehicles on the road. They obsolete already and not even off the ground and running yet.
This isnt to say that they dont have a place for people who find them useful, like anything, one size doesnt fit all. You can bet every wealthy person in addition to their expensive battery powered vehicle will have the equal and better supersized ICE vehicle to show off in the future.

A 1/4 mile is 1,320 feet. I'm 70 and can walk that much faster. Heck, from the back corner of my local Walmart, to the back of the opposite end of the parking lot is further than that. That's a 5 minute journey.... Even pushing a full cart.

Absolutely, but I still need to drive my route. I too would think some people would chose to walk as the bus stops are 1/4 mile apart in urban areas but they don't.

https://www.evtripplanner.com/ says it is 20:19 and 1326.6 miles no matter what you drive. Plus 3:22 spent charging a Tesla Model 3 LR. 8 stops, none over 31 minutes.

We could have another thread on the safety of rest stops (or lack thereof) during a 20 hour drive. You claim fuel stops are only 5 minutes, but they are at least 15 minutes getting off/on interstate plus pee breaks run them up to as much as 30 minutes.

"nowhere for me to charge up there", so they don't have electricity at all? A 120V 15A outlet works. Slowly, but works, and is not "nowhere". Electric dryer outlets are often found inside garages and work even better. Best yet is an RV NEMA 14-50 outlet, also used for welders. You suffer from The Gas Station Fallacy. You believe because you have always used gas stations, depended on gas stations, therefore no EV is useful or practical without gas stations.
Let's be real, unless you're an enthusiast an EV on a 20 hour trip is a major inconvenience for some, most everyone.
Come on, safety of rest stops? at least 15 minutes getting off interstates and bathroom breaks another 15 minutes. *LOL* and where do you charge the EV? While you are driving on the interstate?

I mean, let's acknowledge the limitations and safety of the charge points as well as the ridiculous long recharge time of EVs on long trips instead of making believe a ICE vehicle is almost the same. Not even close.

Weren’t all of the cars utter crap in the 70’s as emissions controls took a decade plus to mature? Nobody liked that, but the 90’s had some nice reliable cars, even the 2000’s.

The various grandfathering of existing vehicles will last for quite sometime. Just buy what you want, keep it for 20 years. No small order I know.
No, because the emissions add-ons of the 1970's could be easily removed/bypassed ( a GM guy's experience) leaving us with the basic reliable pre-emission drivetrain.

I compared my C40 to my RDX on a 5 hour trip (Across the state of Missouri, diagonally). The C40 added 30 minutes to the trip. I took both at a leisurely rate, stopping to eat or whatever whenever I felt like it.

I stopped to charge the C40 twice. Once at a gas station which offered fresh pizza, and once at Wal-mart supercenter. Neither felt sketchy and both afforded me a bathroom and some food. I stopped once for fuel in the Acura, and also ate a burger at the same stop. I stopped another time for the bathroom and something to drink.

To me the EV discussions are fascinating mostly not for the technical aspects but for the cultural elements. We are entering maybe the most profound tech/societal evolution this country has ever seen. It is still very unclear if the EV changes will be simply the creation of a new niche or a complete revolution in our transportation system and its ancillary infrastuctures. This Venn diagram captures the essence of these changes but I believe it (purposely?) leaves out the environmental aspects and the concomitant and annoying virtue signaling.

I fall somewhere in the blue circle. Does any of this describe you?

A-Venn-diagram-describing-the-different-types-of-BEV-buyers-highlighting-the.png
Oh man, I dunno. I have a pretty equal amount of traits from each circle, but only "technical innovation" matters to me from the white circle, unless fuel economy means EV vs. Gas.

Let get real, sure there is a difference on trips, and it's easily predictable and definable.

What is and isnt "ridiculous" is up to each person. Your opinion being espoused as fact for all is ridiculous.

There is also a difference in town, likewise on the other foot pretending it does not exist is as ridiculous as EV owners pretending long trip times are the same.

Both sides need to stay real about the matter.

A 20 hour drive is a major source for fun for everyone else in an ICE? I think most people, car people or otherwise, would find that a long day. Charging stops or not. Charging would make worse, no doubt. Sitting still for 5 hours straight until the gas tank runs down? that's somehow more fun??? last I did that, it sure didn't feel like "fun". I was so glad to get out and stretch--and so did not want to get back in for the next 5 hour leg.

Low compression smog heads with low lift camshafts? the engines were still neutered.

Technically no more legal to bypass that than the controls we have today (just a lot more easy, and with way less oversight back then).

I don't deny that those engines were crap back then, and many times did run better w/o, but many has the air quality gotten better since then.

Dont put words in my mouth or cherry pick lines. But I am glad you agree = "Charging would make worse, no doubt" and that is why I say to each their own whatever floats their boat, ICE or EV.

No we dont agree = "Sitting still for 5 hours straight until the gas tank runs down? that's somehow more fun??? last I did that, it sure didn't feel like "fun". I was so glad to get out and stretch--and so did not want to get back in for the next 5 hour leg"

The Tesla had eight stops to recharge. Their 5 hour trips would be my 4 hour ICE trips.
I ran from 10 miles north of Columbia SC to Yulee Florida in exactly 4 hours on 7 occasions early summer 2022/ in total comfort in a nice big 3 row SUV, not a compact car like a Model 3.
I did not need to stop, I was not uncomfortable, one or two quick stops at the interstate rest stop bathroom and back on the road. No recharging my vehicle, no gas stations. No need to hang out and eat while my car recharges. Where ever I travel the current EVs would add drastically to my times and comfort would not be close to what I currently have.
I would actually drive to Florida to look at homes in new communities, many times on my own while my wife was working, I would get there by 10 or 11 AM and be back home in South Carolina for dinner by 5 or 6 PM. No stress, no recharging, no need to stop and eat.

Current EVs are not as comfortable for long trips and they will increase your travel time significantly at a might high purchase price to top it off.
For sports and for local driving Im all in, long trips? No way.

Exactly and you are happy with your vehicle. Nothing wrong with that, I replied just above why this doesnt work for me.
I dont eat and I dont stop, except an interstate rest room. Only time I stop is at my destination 4 Hours later. With an EV I would lose one to two hours in a travel day driving to Florida and Back home in a 12 hour period and less comfort too. Granted I suspect that C40 is more comfortable than most others, for what it's worth, I think it's awesome looking, but recharging on trips wouldnt be my thing. I wouldnt mind owning one though! But would still have my ICE SUV>
No kidding though, beautiful C40 and why I think with all the EVs coming "online" (no pun intended) Tesla is going to be hit pretty good, it would be unnatural in the business world if they were not.

The only thing I have that's "Plaid" is a shirt. I haven't worn it since the 70's.
Cool... You got the shirt; all you need is the car! Take me for a spin when ya get it! Just kidding, of course.

Still wondering... How often do you drive over 200 miles in a day?
