Cold Weather And EV's

California has set a date when ICE vehicles will no longer be sold. That's as good as a ban.

Try building a new home in California today without incorporating solar. They mandated that as well.
Wish my home had solar whan I bought it. Best deal in town!
And if installed in a housing tract assembly line style, the incremental cost would be minimal, right?

In January of 1975 I drove my mothers 1974 Chevy Nova from Chicago to Key West, Florida in under 30 hours. Not a problem all the way. Try that with a EV today.
Easy. Drive is 23hrs/1500 miles. Start with fully charged Tesla 3 which has about 300+ range.

You get 6-7 stops for 15 mins at Tesla supercharger to gain 200 miles of range and break. That is about 2hrs of charging leaving another 5 hours of cushion……

The one thing that stood out for me in that video, was at most of those charging stations there wasn't anywhere to go. You're there in the middle of the night, trying to recharge your EV, and it's below zero and cold as hell.

What can you do? Sit there for God knows how long. (That's assuming the charger even works), freezing your rear off, because if you run the heat while you're waiting, you are going to be sitting there even longer. The whole thing just seems to be impractical as hell when it plays out in reality.
Coworker went in his BMW i4 from Montreal to Halifax (not crossing into US) in 15-20F weather . The chargers varied in output however at no time he turned off heat while waiting / sleeping to pass time on this 800 mile trip. He stated it took an extra 4 hrs due cruddy charging options as he went rural . He did work from car .

Soon we'll be traveling 1000 miles in 15 hrs between our homes in a large SUV that can carry large cargo items and/or tow a trailer. We do this 10-12 times a year, year after year. No EV in our future.

I spoke to an older lady today at the grocery store with a lightning. Her and her husband also own a leaf and charge at home and her son has a Tesla. They just got the lightning recently so can't comment on long term but she thinks it should be an option along with gasoline and they are taking their first long trip tomorrow with it (2 hours). If you want to own one of these be ready to chat with random people (like I have to with my 84 cutlass). She obviously was used to people asking about it, as she seemed ready to chat when I rolled down my window.
Ive had a few people chat. They mainly compliment, ask how long it takes to charge, etc. Polite and curious.

We can’t talk about politics but I mentioned change of affiliation. Last one was 2010.
Those ICE dates will stand. In fact, I wouldn't be at all surprised if they advanced them as time marches on. If that states history proves anything, it proves that. You're talking about wishful thinking that is never going to materialize.

I really like how the sodium-ion battery tech is evolving. I feel all the current EV's with the lithium batteries will be dinosaurs when the sodium battery makes it's way into EV's...kinda like what the lithium did to the NiCd, and NiMh.

This looks promising to deal with the buildup of sodium at desalination plants which is what California needs.

You're forgetting we're talking about California. When is the last time you saw a political about face pulled off in that state? Hell, they reelected the same governor they just recalled.
Why are so into CA ? You don’t live there. I don’t get why people get so wound up about something they cannot change or has nothing to do with them.

It's not a question of, "getting wound up". It's a direct reality. If you don't want to face the facts of it, along with how they are the driving force behind the bulk of this type of EV mandate crap, that's fine.

But that doesn't mean others aren't concerned about the very real possibility of having something forced upon them they don't want any part of. And California leads the way in that department. With all of this green crap. Along with many other things.

Be it solar panels, or EV's, the government should stay the hell out of it.... Period. Other states are following suit. And the fact of the matter is people don't like it. This has nothing to do with, "hating EV's". But rather having something forced upon them they do not want.

California has taken the approach of pushing something on the public, instead of allowing the free market to operate as it should. And living there or not, it will have repercussions nationwide for the rest of the country. Regardless if you want to believe it or not. Or care or not. This type of complete nonsense is borderless when it comes to the negative effect it produces.

EDIT: The fact I have to explain any of this to you tells me a lot.

I agree. I follow CA because the nonsense that occurs there is either going on here or is soon to come. The only difference here is the EV isn't taking off as quickly. I think people in my area realize climate, traffic, and the antiquated grid is not conducive to the EV yet. Sad to see what CA, MA, and NY to name a few turned into. I also have a feeling the ICE is going to be around longer than the powers that be think.

Okay so what are you going to do about except raise your blood pressure and vote locally and federally?

For me. INstead drove my to ski home this week/weekend and enjoyed that. Back to work next week in an interesting IT job that pay and “title” turned into 50% pay increase. Some work due to EV push.

I just go with the flow. Life is really good if you want it to be. Also shutting off your TV with CNN, Fox extremism helps.
