Code scanner recommendations

I've been looking at the Equus 3100 series (3120, 3130, etc).
This would be my first scanner but I want something that I won't grow out of, yet not be TOO complicated. I want to able to use it a variety of vehicles, although right now it's just my 2001 Crown Victoria. I don't need to have OBD-1 capability. I have a Mac computer, so anything that would use a PC does me no good.

I hear alot of good things about the Scangauge II, but I don't want to give up too much diagnostic ability for all of the cool info it gives while driving.

I am looking to keep it under $200, which is what most of the Equus models go for on Amazon.

The Equus 3100 series is a great start for you. They also show live data, which is helpful for some diagnostics. I've got a 3110 and use it often because it's fast and easy. I also have 7 other scan tools, some of which costs thousands of dollars like my GM Tech 2. So if I am getting use out of a little Equus you will sure be fine with it too.

Is there a certain model of the 3100 series you would think is best? They range from about $70 to $200, so are there features I would likely never use? Or other features that I should have?

SGII owner here. Since most code-only readers run around $80-$120, why not pay $150 for a ScanGauge and get the extra functionality? After all, you only need a code reader to...read codes... which the SGII does, but so much more.

Certain 3100 series models do offer the live data like a SG but they also offer more like readiness test progress etc. Not saying the SG is not neat, it sure is. There are also other units out there like a SG but have way better color screens with gauges and other neat stuff. The do cost more, though!

Yes I'm pleased with it. It has already saved me a trip to the dealer.

One of the disadvantages of scangauge is that it sort of becomes dedicated to the single vehicle apart from not doing the live data. If you want to maximize your fuel economy get the scangauge but if you want code scanner, get a code scanner.

I'd say OTC Nemisys or Genisys.

I have an Equus 3140 that I picked up used for $60. Very good deal.
