I have a 2006 Volvo V50 2.4 liter with 103,000. I have been driving my normal route and over the past 2 months I have noticed my gas mileage has gone down. A week ago I did an oil change, new air filter and new spark plugs (Volvo OE plugs from the dealer). Drove the car to the grocery store once and when I came back out to the car it threw a code on start up (P0171 Lean bank 1). Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Did you unplug and lines when changing your air filter? Check that first as well as the airduct tubing for leaks.

Check for vacuum leak. Intake manifold gasket a common source of that code. Could also be dirty/lazy MAF or upstream pre-cat o2 sensor.

On my truck this code was caused by a tiny hole on the underside of the PCV valve hose, so don't overlook simple things like hoses and vacuum lines.

check for broken vacuum lines, intake gasket leaks and poss MAF contamination. If you can, have someone read freeze frame to see when the code set (hot or cold, cruise or idle, etc.) This will point you in the right direction.

Thank you for all the responses! I am still trying to track down what is causing the code. I dont think it is a vacuum leak. BUt other than spraying starting fluid around all the vacuum lines I dont know how to check for that. I have tried cleaning the MAF and that has not done anything. The exhaust does not smell rich at all so I dont think it is an O2 sensor. I really dont want to have to resort to taking it somewhere to have them diag the problem but it is getting close to that point...
