Cocoa mulch kills dogs

Yup, chocolate is toxic to dogs. After our last dog passed on, about five years ago, my kids were devastated and decided they wanted a Chihuahua. Who could say no. . . So we now have this spunky little monster. Actually a great dog, you just have to understand the definition of a Chihuahua -- a five pound dog who has no idea she's not a 50 pound timberwolf.

Anyway, at five pounds, these dogs are also immensely susceptible to toxic stuff. In fact, the more a Chihuahua wants something, the more poisonous it probably is. Ask me how I know. Ask me how expensive this lesson has proven to be. . . Yeah, anything chocolate is poison to dogs. Beware.

Must affect different dogs in different ways. We had a Sheltie when I was a kid, and she routinely stole candy from us. Once she ate one of those big 1 pound bags of M&M's and never batted an eye. Lived to be almost 16 years old too. My shepherds would also snag chocolate--and anything else they could get away with, and they never suffered.
Please don't misunderstand; I'm not contesting the post, just my experiences are different.

In general, chocolate isn't as bad as often said. Still a whole pound of M&M's would be a big chunk for a Sheltie. Trouble is, it is cumulative.

Some dogs are very sensitive to grapes and raisins.

It has to be the bakers chocolate that is deadly to dogs. My chocolate lab eats everything that falls on the floor even a sock once but never chocolate.

M&Ms are oblate spheroids with a colored sugar glazed shell and a chocolate core. They are also smaller copies of the larger Smarties, which were introduced by Nestlé a few years before Hershey came out with M&Ms.

The issue with theobromine (which has similar effects as caffeine) is that it is not metabolized well/quickly in some animals (dogs and horses in particular) and can result in uncontrolled urination, vomiting, and diarrhea. It can be lethal to dogs! It is found primarily in the cocoa solids so the darker the chocolate, the more problem. Since white chocolate is made from the cocoa fats instead of the solids, it is generally very low in theobromine.

There is also some evidence that like the difference between man and dogs, there may be a differnce in theobromine metabolism between men and women. But that, that is a different thread altogehter...

Did I really write "Thebromoine"? I've become dyslexic. Great.

Anyway, speaking of dogs and chocolate, while I have never owned a dog, I can confirm that some people feed their dogs See's candies and string cheese. Just yesterday I saw some guy feed his spitz a twinkie of all things! I also saw a corgi that was dragging its gut on the road, while wheezing like an asthmatic pug.

So that's why there's an adult diaper store next to the candy factory!

My dog consumed a one pound bag of M&Ms and threw up 17 times. He also managed to throw up in every room of the house on our brand new carpet. He is still alive...for better or for worse.

ROFL! Honey, roll out the plastic sheeting. The dog's on a barfing tour of the house and he's booked every room!

I'm a cat owner, BTW, so I've cleaned up my fair share of barf.

I'm pretty sure I've heard that dark chocolate is much more of a problem than the milk chocolate in most candy.

My grammas beagle ate one of her nylons once, poor granny was out in the back yard pulling nylon out of "buddy,s" hoop for 10 minutes before the end came out, after that she put her nylons up where bud couldnt get at them and bought him a street hockey ball to play with instead.

One of the highlight of the tour of the dog guide school is the display of things surgerically removed from them.
