My son wants one of these cars and, with all the horror stories on front end parts going south, I would like to know how hard of a job to DIY?

I don't know of too many horror stories on later models (2007+), but I did have to have the lower control arm bushings replaced on my 2007 at 30 something K miles. The dealer had it done in no time and it was a free warranty repair for me. It doesn't look like a bad DIY job should you need to. You get a telltale clunk over bumps that sounds just like bad stabilizer bar end-links.

This happened to me 3 months ago on my 2003 ION.

I paid a dealership ~$100 for new bushings, and then I took my control arms off.

I had to beat the old bushings off with a hammer. Each side took about 30 minutes of beating.

After 1 hour and 30 minutes it was all back together.

I didn't align the car afterwards, but it drove straight anyway.
