Hello

Is there a good do it all (clean, lube and protect) that I can pick up locally?

Rem oil comes to mind as I've seen it at WalMart and I emailed Ruger (as I have a P95) and here was the transaction:

Do you recommend a certain type of cleaner/oil for the P95. All I saw mentioned in the manual was some solvent powder. Can I just use Rem Oil as both a cleaner and oil? I would really like to avoid the powder if there is no benefit as it might be difficult to remove it all. My last gun used Breakfree CLP for both cleaning and oiling. thanks Response: Yes, you may use Rem Oil on your firearm. We recommend that you do not use any type of solvent on the frame. But would suggest you try Birchwood – Casey’s Stock Restorer. We have found it work very well on all Synthetic frames.



I haven't seen Breakfree locally, but they mention on their webpage that it is available at several local stores. It WAS recommended by my previous gun's maker.


Also, do I need any grease or can I get away with just an oil?

I like Hoppes 9 for my cleaning and Rem oil for most actions. Some grease here and there for others. Really never found a "all in one" that works as well as what I've done for many decades.

Your P95 does not need any grease. Just shoot it and when its really dirty, clean it and then lightly oil it.

Rem Oil is more of a Solvent for cleaning than a oil for protection.
Although depending on if your gun is stainless, and the location where you live it should work just fine.
There are all kinds of good stuff you can find at Academy, most sporting goods store carry quality oils that will protect in their Fishing section if they don't have a firearms section.

BTW, if you have a Stainless Ruger, just wipe it down occasionally with Rem Oil and you will be fine.
 
The best do all I have seen for my use is eezox, however as Bill said it's not a end all product, I still use specialize copper cleaners, or wipe out... very few times have I found a use for grease on a firearm for my purposes..

eezox is a dry lube, also eezox protects against rust better than any rust preventative I have ever used, and I have used many many as I have rusty fingers so to speak...
 
I use Weapon Shield for everything. Makes cleaning a breeze.

Many weapons ship with grease because they can sit for a long time before their first use.

Went to walmart and saw a 2 step cleaner and oil, forgot the name. Also saw CLP Breakfree, but said Winchester on the can too.

Too many aerosol cans out there. All I want is a medicine dropper/vial. Spraying would seem to waste alot as well as make a real mess as I like to clean my guns on my desk in the house.

Never heard of Big 5, Tom Slick.

Will check out ****'s, Academy and Bass Pro.

Come to think of it Bill, I think Hoppe's is what I saw in Walmart
 
Hoppes is old school but works. Smells bad! I don't like to have to use 2 different products when there are good CLP's out there that work. Weapon Shield has NO solvents in it which I like.

If you want something that can be found locally it's hard to beat Break Free CLP.

I agree with the spray cans. They are a mess and a waste. You should be able to get smaller bottles at Bass Pro. The one here has them.
 
Just called Hoppe's and Breakfree CLP to see if they were polymer safe.

Waited a while for Hoppe's with no answer and Breakfree said their CLP was a ok on polymer.

Just have to find it in a medicine type dropper now.

Do ya'll know of any other polymer safe cleaners and/or oils?

preferably something that is found in walmart, ****'s, academy or bass pro.
 
M16's, M249's and most other military weapons have a lot of plastic on them. Anything the military uses for lube will be plastic safe.

I haven't used Hoppe's in years, but it does have stronger solvents in it.
 
FYI, this is Ruger again answering a question of mine.

"Hey I have a blued P95 with a polymer frame and wondering what cleaners and oils to use on the gun.. Now, I dont plan to get anything on the frame but accidents do happen, so I will need a polymer safe cleaner/oil. I have tried contacting companies but is hard to do. Hoppe's, RemOil and Breakfree CLP are all available locally to me. Would these cause any problems if they come in contact with the polymer frame? thanks againJoseph Response: The Hoppes and RemOil should work fine on the gun but would not recommend the use of the Breakfree, it may discolor the frame. "
 
Another (unrelated this time) FYI

From Ruger's FAQ:

Can I store my Ruger pistol with rounds in the magazine?

"It is seldom advisable to keep a constant load on any compression spring"

From Ruger's FYI. I hope its not too severe or maybe they're just being safe but I keep rounds in the magazine.
 
I just got the RemOil for $2 and ounce.

Also Bass Pro had a deal on cleaning kits for $6.50 plus a slotted tip for $2.

It has synthetic and cotton patches and I guess they're somewhat cheap and/or my pistol has alot of rough edges. There are small fibers everywhere. Makes me nervous, but I spied through the barrel/bore and it was super clear.

Ruger said they didn't require grease (as has been said here). It was cosmoline (webster's define it as petroleum jelly). Just as was said here, to aid in long time storage. You guys should get a job with a firearm manufacturer.


As far as Breakfree, on the bottle it read safe, but didn't reference as to what it was safe for.
