75W90 Gear Oil

I have one bottle of each of the Wilson Combat lineup.

The “grease” is simply a heavy oil and I remember reading that it’s basically Lucas gun oil with some Lucas Assembly Lube.

It works well.

Also, it doesn’t stink.

You might be able to make your own mix, but the truth is - Wilson combat grease costs less than a penny, each time you lube a 1911, so why bother.

Just buy it off the shelf and see how it works for you.

First Gear Lube is acid based. Second it stinks because of sulfur. 3rd it is no better than a 5W30 but has a lot of down sides at the temp. most humans use a gun in. Gear lube is loaded with VII's. A 0W40 or 5W30 would serve better. If the gun is worn out with large clearances than a 15W50.

Half of the year where I live temps are -35°F to about 45°F we get 2-3 months of 96°F and the rest is all over the place.

I would not be able to use a gun lubed with gear lube due to allergies but ambient temps would also be an issue especially in an auto loader.

0000 Semi Fluid Grease is similar to the US Armys older LSA pre-Break Free CLP. Bear in mind they had to have Artic versions because the standard stuff did not work inthe cold.

I would think RIG grease would be a bit too heavy to use on slide rails ? I’d use your gear oil there too if that’s what you want to use.

Just a report from todays shooting trip. I started using 75w90 gear oil as an overall gun lube.
Shot the Ed Brown .45 with absolutely NO FTF, or no FTE for the first time in awhile. I also use RIG on
the rails of all my 1911's and that has also been a good thing. And cleaning was a breeze with no gunk
or crud except the usual powder and a little carbon. Just an FYI for those that want to try gear oil
Two auto lubes which may offer improvement: Mobil 1 V-Twin 20w50 motorcycle oil (40%) + Dexron ATF (40%) + STP Blue Bottle Oil Additive (20%)… Great lube - slang name is “ell snot” ! Next, mix Mobil 1 synthetic motor oil (0,5,10,15W 20,30,40,50) + add Mobil 1 synthetic Grease to the oil in a jar and then mix / stir the two until you get a honey - like consistency when dripped off a stirring stick or spoon (slang name is “sriracha hot sauce oil”). Both options I believe are better than using gear oil and RIG grease on the slide (especially for Fall thru Spring outside). Mix up both above suggestions and see for yourself - you can give to friends too in small needle oilers as gifts.

There are too many options tailored to firearms for me to use auto products. I have never had an issue with the firearm lubes I have used and I doubt using auto lubes will fix any problem that a firearm lube won’t.
