hi

i have a 2006 jetta with stock non-steel wheels. I guess they are alloys?

i am going to soon be getting tires mounted and wanted to ask what i should request weight wise when balancing?

should i go with stick on weight?

or clip on only on the inside of the wheel?

or other?

Thanks

I had an experience where where the stick-on weights came off during my drive home from Discount Tire. If you're able, take your wheels off and clean the inside of them before you have any work done. That's what they neglected to do before putting the weights on my Focus ST. They should clean the spot, stick the weights on and use a heat gun to set them.

Reasonable size tires with real sidewalls will have clip-on weights, such as your Jetta. The newer cars with big wheels and no-profile tires get the stick-on weights.

My Forester with 215/70-15 tires has clip-on weights installed with new tires in late 2023

Factory rims often take crimp on weights. There are about eight varieties, to match different rim profiles. I'd trust the tire shop to use what's best for you. If for whatever reason you don't want crimp on weights (cosmetics) you can request sticky ones, you can even have the guy hide them behind the spokes. It just takes more weight because you're closer to the center of mass.

Yes they should clean your inside rims for the sticky weights. And yes they don't really care too much when removing them, and typically just chisel them off with a screwdriver, leaving a tiny amount of damage.

The best riding, best balancing weights you can get will be crimpy ones though theoretically either will work.

i got both when i took in my CRV to discount . if you watch them work , when doing a rotate and balance, they often have 2 people doing it. i guess one guy decided stick on on one side and the other guy clip on.

The last Jetta that I owned, a 2009 Mk 5, had these wheels in 16". They were made to only accept tape-on weights.

The secret to ensuring that stick on weight stay in place is making sure the location on the alloy is clean.
