Clean your EGR Valve, just DO IT!

No, I am saying that pinging will be caused by an unclean EGR valve.

EGR valve operation is actually in part a detonation control mechanism.

Blazer- I'm loosing track of your actual situation. You cleaned your EGR and it works better eg idles smoother but you still have pinging?

So what's the best way to clean the pre-EGR pipe ? Or is it better to just leave that alone? I can visualize loose fragments of carbon being ingested if cleaned improperly.

I meant the pipe that runs from the pre-cat area to the EGR unit itself. The one in my car is at least 2 1/2 feet long. Should cleaning that be attempted?

Just did mine so we'll see what happens. There was some gunk in the intake manifold which I pulled out...hard bits of carbon. Shot some carb cleaner up in the EGR and worked the valve up and down...must still be good as the diaphragm pushed air out the vacuum tube. I'll have to get the engine timed as right now it is backed off by 2*. I'm crossing my fingers that this will solve the pinging.

If you got a Honda with 100k miles, make sure you clean the IACV (Idle air control valve) as the wire mesh screen gets clogged with carbon.

I cleaned the IACV & the throtle body in a Civic and I was surprised how big of a difference it made.

My friend is going through this now.

high idle problem caused by the IAC constantly getting plugged with carbon.

Assuming you have one, just look for a tube or something that is coming UP from an exhaust manifold, follow this tube and it'll go to the EGR.

The EGR will be attached to the intake manifold.
