Clean from sludge or piston clean

Ok so it's time for my oil change and I was thinking about trying Pennzoil Platinum. The reason is because they say it helps keep pistons cleaner, while the regular Pennzoil only mentions keeping engine clean from sludge. I'm assuming Platinum also does the sludge thing.

So anyway, what benefits would my engine get from having the pistons be cleaner than if I use regular Pennzoil Conventional? Or since I change it ragularly, would there be any difference at all?

Just wanting to know if the platinum is worth the cost of the hype.

To me it is worth the extra cost.

What vehicle is this and what is the driving style like??

I'd wager most BITOG members like yourself have little to fear in the sludge dept. You most likely have been diligent about your OCIs.Just keep using yellow bottle

You haven't mentioned the application, if it was a DI car I'd definitely choose PP if not PU.

The difference in NOACK volatility between PP and PU is rather surprising, at least in the 5w30 grade:

NOACK may not be the be-all end-all criterion when it comes to DI engines, but I'd say its an important one and PU clearly exceeds PP in that area. In fact its significantly better than everything else tested in the link above.

Frankly I have a hard time seeing why PP is still around. There's not a big enough gap between Pennzoil Conventional and Pennzoil Ultra to justify an intermediate oil, IMO. But then SOPUS are the ones making the billions of dollars, not me. :-)

It's a daily driver with over 200k miles. up intil this last oil change I've change the oil every 3k form 0 miles to 200k, and the last two oil changes have been 5k and now 6k.

By the way, what does "Dl" car?

I don't entirely disagree with you.

I did favour Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 over PU if you required a lighter 30wt oil, but that was partly because it had a VI of 177. But now that we know it is only 171 the lightness advantage over PU is lessened although the HTHSV difference is still significant at 3.0cP vs 3.2cP.
Although the lower CCS of PU further mitigates that difference unless PP is cheaper.

In the 5W-20 grade there are still significant viscosity differnences between PU and PP, the later quite a bit lighter although that is not a point that Pennzoil emphasises in their marketing.

To clarify: Are we saying that Pennzoil Platinum 5W-20 is a lighter 20-grade, while PU is a heavier 20-grade approaching 30-grade?

I ask because you already know I blend in Redline 0W-20 and now Redline 0w30 into my oil mixes (even though I don't have to) because Red Line 0W-20 is not a 20, but rather a 30, weight oil. (Not sure why they label it what they do. When I go to explain it to people, they try toi immediately discredit me based on what it says in the bottle. Of course, they use 40-grade to begin with, for normal everyday use, because .. ok, not gonna go there. But it's what they always did, and it always worked, so.)

Yeah I know right? Just go with the PP.

PU clearly has the advantage in very cold weather starting. This is a perfect example of how misleading a VI can be.

What part of the piston are you expecting the oil to clean?

^^^ This.

With 3k oil changes and 200k engine life so far, you've got a great recipe going.

No harm with Pennzoil Platinum or Pennzoil Ultra, though, but not sure you'd gain much if anything.

Does it use oil between changes?

It's not misleading at all.
An oil's VI has little to no bearing on it's extreme cold performance but rather it's cold start performance at more typical temp's like 32F and that is still relative to it's HTHSV rating.

This car has gone to 200k. Why in the world would you change anything??. What proof other than marketing words do you have where you can see proof that any of this is the truth? If it says gets teeth whiter can we believe this?? They tell you things that you want to hear. All over BITOG you have evidence of people who repair engines saying it is more the oci than the oil. Save the money and use it for something you know really works. IMHO

Any oil will do 5-6k OCIs in a daily driver. Pick the one that's on sale.
