I have a Mazda MPV, 2000 year model. It has a Ford Duratec V6 engine, 2.5 liter, the smallest V6 around, I guess. For quite a few years, the engine has had a metal rattling (or clapping) noise when the rpm is in 1600-2000 range, and only when the engine is fully warmed up. I took to a dealer before, and they told me it was the belt tensioner. I replaced the tensioner and belt, only to find out it was not the cause. I don't feel any adverse engine performance though.
I believe it's related to the timing chain or the chain guide, but not 100% sure, since it's a lot of work to take apart the front end of the engine.
Please chime in if you had this problem with your Duratec engine, and if you have a solution or a suggestion, please let me know. Thanks.
