wife just called and said she was going down the road and the car died all of the sudden. 98 civic with 228k, had the timing belt and water pump changed 165k, sounds like it could be the timing belt to me, if not the timing belt, what else could it be?

Fuel related? Pretty much any time any vehicle of mine dies it's fuel pump, clogged filter, etc.

I don't think we have enough information. What happens when you try to start it back up?
60 k on timing belt .. maybe it let go. Open the oil fill , and see if the cam is turning when you crank it. Otherwise the basic tests; fuel ,spark , compression

Timing belt or camshaft/crankshaft position sensor. It's happened to my E430.

What do you mean it will fire but not turn over? Do you mean it will crank but not start?

How can it "fire" if it won't turn over? If it wont turn over, gotta be battery/battery cable related or loss of main electrical feed. Either that or its seized up solid.

Fuel pumps will generally not die while driving, and as a whole a timing belt does not tear while driving, usually while starting(the sudden shock load). Does it try to start at all or just crank, did it stall like someone turned off the key or like you ran out of fuel and sputtered out.
You said coil was replaced 2 months ago, that is internal in the distributor. was the igniton module, or in honda terms the ignitor also replaced, and why did the coil need to be replaced, I don't know about other places, but as a whole at our shop most problems with hondas has been from something that someone else messed up, what happened that caused the coil to go bad??
If the distributor was replaced then the ignitor was replaced, was it an oe honda dist? this aftermarket stuff is often not very good ecspecially for ignition components. What happened that coil needed to be replaced???? why the distributor replacemnt, Did you have this stalling problem before? Did you ever have the ignition switch replaced? Honda had a recall, the contacts were not heavy enough, and could short out and cause these problems. we have seen that at the shop before.
