I understand that originally 0/30w was the choice for my car but the Honda dealers have now swapped to 5/30w my local one Informed me

I service my own cars and I'm due to service this one.

I've read In many places that C3 is the choice. I believe I read on the wiki civic forum that it was A5

I'm just curious Castrol magnate C3 or Castrol magnate A5

Any advice would be aplreciated

Thanks I've finally dug out my handbook. The C3 is if it has a dpf filter.
It says for the diesel 0w30 meeting minimum spec of ACEA A1/B1, ACEA A3/B3 or ACEA A5/B5

For petrol it's to meet minimum spec of ACEA C2 or C3

They have no idea apparently what is ACEA. Similar is in Hyundai vehicles. There is no such thing as "minimum ACEA specification." What they wrote makes absolutely no sense.
Go with C3 DPF or not. C3 is lower SAPS oil compared to A3/B3. That is it. It has minimum HTHS 3.5cp which is what you want in turbo engine, especially of that older generation. You are in Europe, which means you have available probably highest quality diesel in the world. That means C3 will work perfectly.
Castrol Edge 0W30 C3 is best you can get of C3 oils.
ACEA A1/B1 is old specification, very outdated, thinner side. ACEA A5/B5 is more stringent but still on thinner side.
C2 is on thinner side, but there are C3 oil meeting C2 bcs. they meet MPG requirement for C2. For example Mobil1 ESP 5W30 is both C3 and C2. That oil is also really good.

Would Castrol magnate C3 or A5 be ok for my car?

Eurocarparts have shell helix with A5 rating and it's on a very good offer at the moment

Am I likely to cause any damage with A5 oil?

A5 is good, but C3 is 'better' which your car doesn't need .
No, A5 specs causes no damage .
With good A5 offer , go for it .

Do not use any A5 oil in that diesel engine. Honda is out sailing when it comes to recommended specs for their engines. Mobil 1 5w30 esp or Castrol edge 0w30 c3 will be one of the best oils to use in that engine.

Hi edyvw
Would a MB229.51 C3 5w30 be ok for our OP Honda?
If so I can link him to a very reputable source of cheap genuine Mercedes branded oil here in UK.
Thanks.

YES! MB229.51 is always one to go after.
Castrol Edge 0W30 C3 has MB229.51.
Unfortunately we in the US do not have that oil, we have A3 version which I use in my VW Tiguan.
Edge 0W30 C3 is probably as good as you can get C3 oil. I is only oil in Castrol line up together with Super Car 10W60 that is "real" synthetic.

Hi
Well in that case here is the link for the opening poster. Genuine Mercedes branded MB229.51 from a Mercedes main dealer. 20 litres at £3.15 a litre delivered. Enough for at least two changes.
