I just received this email from CITGO.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas, March 26, 2009 -- The CITGO Corpus Christi Refinery was awarded on Wednesday the Texas General Land Office’s prestigious 2008 Oil Spill Prevention and Response Act (OSPRA) Award. For the first time, the award has been bestowed on the same company for two consecutive years, as a testament to the core values of CITGO and its commitment to environmental stewardship. CITGO employees take very seriously their responsibility to comply with environmental regulations and serve as guardians of our natural resources and environment.

The OSPRA Award was established by the TGLO, the oldest state agency in Texas, to recognize organizations that have excelled in their efforts to comply with the state’s Oil Spill Prevention and Response Act of 1991. The agency’s primary functions include managing state lands and mineral rights, leasing drilling rights for oil and gas production and protecting the state’s natural resources.

Specifically, the 2008 award recognized the Refinery’s initiatives and achievements during the 2008 calendar year. These included:

Zero oil spills from January 1, 2008 through December 31, 2008 while transferring some 6 billion gallons of crude, feedstocks and refined petroleum products across its marine docks.

Commissioned an underflow dam to contain any residual oil within Refinery property while still allowing for movement of rain run-off and tidal waters between Oak Park waterway and ship channel.

Purchased, retrofitted, and donated a portable trailer to the Texas General Land Office dedicated exclusively for treatment and rehabilitation of oiled wildlife affected by oil spills.

Sponsored a “Regulatory Agency Day” for USCG, TGLO, TCEQ, U.S. Fish & Wildlife, Texas Parks & Wildlife, U. S. Customs, and Corpus Christi Fire Dept. representatives to educate them on the Refinery’s operations and to tour its facilities.

Sponsored a “Marine Consortium” for USCG, TGLO, U.S. Customs, Pilots Association, Corpus Christi Fire Dept., and local shipping companies’ representatives to discuss various topics including dock operations, environmental, and safety issues.

Launched a campaign named "Finish Great in 2008" in late October as part of the Refinery's "Eyes on the Environment Program" to focus on completing the year on a very positive note by emphasizing environmental awareness.

CITGO, based in Houston, is a refiner, transporter and marketer of transportation fuels, lubricants, petrochemicals and other industrial products. The company is owned by PDV America, Inc., an indirect wholly owned subsidiary of Petróleos de Venezuela, S.A., the national oil company of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

nice to know that CITGO and VALERO profits may be used for the possible building of a nuclear plant in VENEZUELA with the help of our RUSSIAN allies in the war on terrorism . Also , help build / maintain those landing strips for the RUSSIAN bombers that carry nukes . People need to stop buying their gas , oil products . This applies to LUKOIL ( Russain ) as well .

What's VALERO got to do with it? I thought they were part of the old Diamond Shamrock Oil Company.

I used Citgo gas twice, before Chavez was making headlines. Both times, I got a check engine light in my truck. No other gas has caused that problem. It is, in my humble opinion, the worst gasoline product on the market.

I can't boycott it because of Chavez since I wouldn't use it anyway. If they drastically improve the product, then I could boycott it because of Mr. Pumpkin Head.

Correct Johnny, Valero is a wholly owned, US company.

When gas stations and S. Texas refineries started sporting the Valero name I wondered about it too. Finally noticed the origin of their name when I was researching refinery products on their website-

"Based in San Antonio, Texas, Valero derives its name from that city's most famous landmark, the Alamo. Founded in 1718, the Alamo was originally called Mission San Antonio de Valero."

this program has already reached its limit for this year, but it has been going on for quite some time. I have a friend that got her heating oil tank filled for free.

Don't know, I guess some could be, as well as Canada, Saudia, Kuwait, Iran, Gulf Coast, Korea. Who knows? You would just about have to stop buying all major brands of gasoline if you did not want to buy gasoline that was not made from some Venezuela crude.

Valero, the largest refiner in the US, has many refineries around the country. Some are optimized for light crude (US, Arabian); some are optimized for heavy crude (US, Mexico, Venezuela). The only refinery that I know that uses all Venezuela crude is the one on Aruba that they bought from Coastal. Valero is also into natural gas and coal.

In my opinion, CITGO is being demonized for no good reason. Petróleos de Venezuela, S.A. is one of the largest employers in Venezuela. The Venezuelan people benefit from its operation. Chavez is skimming off the profits just like his predecessors.

I don't think you can condemn a nation for its leader, whatever that may say about the voting.

People spread strange ideas about which gas stations to buy from in order to not support the enemy. I think it is nearly impossible to do so, at least in this region.

I received an email claiming, for example, that BP does not import middle eastern oil. Ya, right! Shame on that claim!

But people who don't know any better might buy into it.

another reason won't buy CITGO is that cars get less mileage than with other brands from our experience .

I know...like oil has some kind of political agenda...doesn't matter anyway...you boycott it and it gets put into a US friendly tanker...sold to a different broker...and delivered to the offloading station in the Gulf of Mexico..now a dollar a barrel more expensive because of the middleman...I call it "oil laundering". They are not going to ship it around the world when we are so close unless the Chinese pay the freight which will drive the global price even higher. So, the boycott backfires and Hugo makes even more. If we really don't like this guy we should buy ALL of his oil and deplete his wells & reserves and his power in the world will evaporate. Suck his wells dry and he will disappear into nowhere when his cash runs out. HIs own people will kick him out when he can no longer provide for them by pumping oil out of the ground. So, BUY CITGO!! and get rid of Hugo.
