Wow...I saw the news footage following the event, but had no idea of the widespread damage to homes caused by liquefaction. The news was focused on things like the cathedral.

Christchurch is beautiful - I've no doubt they will recover in the long run, but the soil composition will create some challenges for urban planning in the future.

Thank you for enlightening me, I had no idea it was so widespread...and yeah, I've been to NZ several times, but it's all been on the north island. South Island and Christchurch remain on my "bucket list".

Oh, and, of course, "Beat Australia!" In honor of the All-Blacks.

I was there in April and I was really curious of what it looked like before the quake. Crazy how different and decimated it is even 5 years later. Its a beautiful area, but the whole country is gorgeous especially the south where we spent most of our time. This makes me think of our trip, and makes me want to go back soon. Driving and hiking will never be the same for me, as nothing ive seen compares to NZ south island.
