Love you long time? LOL

Kidding aside, most of the college students entering American colleges are here for graduate studies, higher probabilities in engineering and sciences, lower probabilities on med, law, and business schools, even lower for undergraduate.

Main reason is that for the same amount of effort, med/law/b school give out better income afterward and has no problem drawing resident students even at full price (i.e. 90k-200k for the program). Engineering on the other hands do not pay significantly more to grad students than undergrad, so they do not attract as many resident students but having a US college degree is more attractive than a foreign one, and is the easier way for foreign students to enter the US job market (thus immigration). They usually pay out of state tuitions that's around 3x (or 2x now that the resident tuition has increased) as much.

For foreign students who haven't enter US high school, the standard of admission for undergrad is relatively high. It is even higher for B/Law/Med schools but it is relatively easy for the science and engineering program in non 1st tier US school (i.e. state universities).

For once we agree. And as far as them becoming Dr's/Engineers etc. Sounds good....but....they take slots that American students could take. Medical schools have X number of slots.
Each person that comes over dilutes the slice of pie that we are all scrambling for, services, jobs, oil/gasoline, etc.

And its not Xenophobia its just down home ol' common sense.

But, but, we can't afford to pay that much for these jobs so we need to lay off the overpaid, and let those who are willing to work for less to get back in line.

Why a sudden change of mind?

I have let it go, but just perplex on why are you thinking we should protect one type of job but not the other.

Actually..you disappointed me. I was hoping you could explain the good in having recent immigrants take jobs and college slots Domestic folks (including domestic Chinese) could take.

Guess you couldn't.

Obviously I won't get an answer here from you.

I can always show good and bad if you want, can you show the good or only bad in everything?

Pro: Foreign students pay non subsidized tuition, so they are not a burden but rather an economic stimulus to the education system (and to some extend, the state economy and reduced burden).

Pro: At least for graduate level, they are usually willing to apply and therefore increased competition means better students overall (more applications -> higher quality if you select the same number of students) to improve the overall system via survival of the fittest.

Pro: Depressing wages for the same quality of work done when more people enter the field. Many low quality small businesses would have gone out if not for the immigration reason holding these people in the same company for 5-7 years pending green card. No sane Americans would work for these poorly run small businesses.

Pro: Their education are already paid for, so why let them go back instead of working here.

Con: Depressing income for population overall by discouraging good employees from getting higher pay.

Con: Discouraging education system from improving K12 education when getting the top N % of the foreigners to work here are cheaper.

Con: Immoral business practice by using immigration bait to pay abusively low salary and unfair hiring practice, especially in small businesses.

Apparently Al couldn't do any logical analysis and would like to be overpaid for his slice of the pie and don't want to pay for fair prices for others' slices of their pie (so called overpaid).

Pandabear wouldn't be here though Al!

In the city of Vancouver, a typical single family detached home, will cost you a million dollars, and the house or the neighborhood are nothing to brag about either. Some of the suburbs, especially North and West Vancouver, are even more expensive.

A few weeks ago, a developer constructing in few houses in an average neighborhood in Richmond, another Vancouver suburb with a large Chinese immigrant population, informed me that he would be selling each house for upwards of a million dollars. According to him, the land itself was worth about $550,000.

Rising property prices have largely been attributed to wealthy buyers from mainland China, many of whom consider Vancouver a safe place to "park" their money.

2nd child comes into play from a few folks I know who moved to Canada and US with quality high paying jobs in China.

You can bet your life that the rampant culture of outragous corruption in the business arena that plagues China is going to come to the US along with these immigrants ,only a matter of time. Doesn't matter that they are "wealthy" there are plenty of folks with money that have NO scruples obviously.

China has some of the WORST culture of corruption anywhere in the world.

Pluse the truth is these folks are truly an alien culture in the US and Canada.

I wonder what would happen if tons of WASPs started to immigrate to China? You know the Chinese gov't would start limiting it as they started to overwhelm the native peoples.

I've seen way worse than China.

Russia and India have been much worse, at least China corrupted officials don't usually confiscate your businesses by jailing you and beat you up, or have dealers sell ticket violation insurance for people to ride train without tickets. Most of the corruption is for businesses to get short cut (or waive regulation violations). Even the financial market price China's risk as lower than India and Russia (especially Russia).

Living in the SF bay area I'd have to say the culture of corruption due to immigrants are usually very low. It is lower than what is already in many US/Canada cities. What's working here is the media raises issues that make most officials not dare to accept bribes (other than campaign contributions).

You live in Seattle and you think they are alien culture? What do you think about the Koreans?

Defend China the country all you want, but remember this is the SAME government that ran over its own college students with tanks!

I personally like Chinese (the people) but their country is truly corrupt down to the grassroots level. It's so bad I doubt they'll ever get it under control.

Oh that's nothing new our military took a few shots at our college students.

Also the students of Yale took quite a few shoots at the British army a ways back.

They also didn't run over them.

Not engineering grad students. They get their education for free. And the $30k or so stipend is a fortune in China or India.

China is heavily subsidizing new business startups over there, so that the folks educated here will be inclined to return.

You really have no idea what you talk about.

That's school and professor specific if they want to pay for the grad students' tuition and salary as TA or RA (grad students have to work in order to get free education), and the cost between resident and non resident students in public universities are different, and that is a fact. If the grad students are that sharp, the professors will pay for all of the cost and some money to live on, but that is very unlikely that professors will pay for everything from grants he got.

Usually, the international students are happy to just get the resident portion of the cost (i.e. 1/3) and pay out of pocket for the non resident portion (i.e. 2/3). They are usually not going to get 30k Stipend when factor in the tuition, and I've never seen someone getting paid that much ever. Usually after subtracting the tuition they get around $500 to 1k a month to live on (rent food transportation, etc). Unless they are that sharp and are on scholarship left and right, which usually exclude international students to begin with, and I've never in my life seen any international students that have gotten a US paid scholarship.

I've also never seen a new grad wanting to go back to China or India as 1st option. They usually like to hire manager or senior level engineers and pay them near (or half, depends) US salary to go back, but a fresh, inexperienced grad going back to China or India will receive China or India salary, which is about 1/4 to 1/3 of US salary.

You're right, they didn't officially remove that policy but I have seen many people have more than 1 child now. The enforcement is very selective and intermittent.
