Chinese 196cc diesel engine from Amazon?

The previous owner put the NEMA 15-5 twistlock plug on because of all the vibrations. It's even worse now. But in the frame, with rubber feet, the thing doesn't "walk" anymore. It still does not sound like a diesel and it doesn't sound much too different from a gas, 3600 RPM generator.

I got 1300 watts out of it, at a "sagging" voltage/ frequency, so it has some motor starting chops if it has to. This also means I can theoretically charge my Prius Prime, on its 8 amp slow mode.

Had to re-jigger the frame to accommodate the physically larger engine by moving the cross bar. It had 1/4-20 allthread all the way through it! Also came up with a cheezy belt guard, watching everything spin was making me nervous. I wound up "machining" the 20mm output shaft down to 3/4" by running the engine and hitting it with an angle grinder. Only took a few minutes, stopping to check with a micrometer as I went. It's ugly but works.

I quite like this. Can you add an hour meter? Home power magazine did a write up on these years ago, like 2 decades. Here’s what I remember:

B&S - 500 hours average lifespan (several used)
Tecumseh - 700 hrs average (of several)
Honda - first Honda engine has been the last they needed, 2000 hours and counting

Would be interesting to see how this one holds up under such a controllable steady-state load over time!

Not sure what kind of B&S engines they were testing, but the 92908 aluminum bore 3.5HP B&S on my push mower has about 1500 hours on it. Still starts and runs as good today as it did brand new in 1977. I have a real hard time believing a Tecumseh would run more hours on average, just about every one of those I ever worked on and or used were pretty lackluster.

I did three of these, angle grinder is definitely the tool to use, I used a fairly coarse grit (36?) sanding pad (with rubber backing) but was gentle. The first one I tried to use sandpaper before giving up; the shaft basically laughed at it.

Nice work! Is the sharpie "diesel" written on both sides for the wife? :)

Yup, she asked for it. I told her she'd know the difference from how weird it starts (and rolls coal until up to speed) but she wanted it anyway, LOL.

She made the correct point that the red gas tank usually implies gasoline if one were to follow the portable can color conventions. Conversely, my old (Pre-Predator) HF gas engines have blue tanks!

They weren’t set up to be terribly scientific about it - I suspect they ran them around 2500 rpm and set the regulator (manual regulator adjustments) to load it up hard for best fuel efficiency. Just a guess, so this would have been stressed loading, and unlike a lawn day where most of the time it’s not near WOT, this would have been a constant high-output load into a battery bank … for 10 hours at a time.

I thought about a new thread, but since there is no real make or model number to this animal, I'm going to continue it.
Has anyone ever come up with a legitimate-branded air filter for this animal?
I do have an old paper 2000 NAPA/Wix filter catalog that lists filter numbers by specs.
Perhaps I should have looked there first.

Sorry I can't help, but curious to know this answer as well.

The first diesel engine on my pressure washer went belly up at under 10 hours. Under load it would belch thick black smoke that would cover the car I was trying to wash in soot. I never did diagnose it, I just threw another one in. This new one has 30+ hours on it and runs like a champ.

I know I'm going to be stuck looking for the air filter eventually.
