Just a reminder that in the rust belt, the drop system for the spare tire system on Chevy trucks requires maintenance, especially if it’s equipped with a safety latch. There is a ton of You Tube videos showing rusted safety latches that cause problems hanging up while trying to drop tires. Annual lubrication is a good idea. Also, remember to mount the tire with the air valve to the bottom. We found my son’s 2010 Silverado was not equipped with a safety latch but we still had issues getting the bar in place to rotate the hoist mechanism. We used a scope beneath the truck to fiddle the bar into place. Good luck.

Owners of Chrysler Town and Country and Dodge Grand Caravan units might want to learn how to drop the spare tire, as the spare tire on many years is located under the floor of the van, in between the front two seats.

Also, they need to figure out if there's even a tire underneath there. For several model years, the spare tire itself was an $295 option.

I replaced the spare tire assembly on our '07 Dodge Grand Caravan in 2021. I lowered the tire a few weeks ago (primarily to check the tire pressure) and found the wings that fold back to release the tire were badly rusted. I soaked them in penetrating oil and got them working again, but it was a good reminder that I need to keep up with annual maintenance.

I also lowered the spare on Jr's 2009 Kia van, and lubed the cable. I had replaced the entire assembly in 2023.

This system is far from ideal (at least here in the rust belt), but with the 3rd row folding into the floor it would be hard to stow the spare anywhere else.

Yup, a friend was dismayed to find his 2016 Grand Caravan came without a spare. That's part of the Canada Value Package - they give you a can of sealant and an electric compressor instead of a spare.
