Chevrolet HHR Questions

I rented one for 12 days and 2500 miles last summer, and remember liking it pretty well. Mileage averaged about 30, and the power was adequate. (Consider that my daily driver is a 2WD Silverado 5.3.) For what it's worth, the other car I regularly drive is a '94 Saturn. The HHR handled like it was on a rail in comparison.

The back was not as roomy as I had expected, at least for a family of three on vacation. I had to pack really carefully, but some of that was probably because of one giant suitcase. The biggest negative was poor visibility because of the window design and big headrests.

2) There are other cars in that category that are superior and get more attention
3)It's made in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico, not the precision engineering capital of the world, and so people end up selling them after they figure out it's a turd.
4) It's a failed GM Delta platform , will soon be discontinued and other cars built on that platform are set to or have already been terminated.
5) Trying to sell it after you're done with it will be darn near impossible because no one knows what the heck it is.

You are spitting out absolute B-S.

I don't like that it's made in Mexico either BUT bet you didn't know that that Ramo's plant has consistant high quality scores. I know - I've been there before to learn some of their processes for my own plant. The HHR is far from a turd. It may not be my cup if tea, but for the market it serves, it did well. I think it's a better car than the PT Cruiser was. While the platform may be "outdated" to you, it does not = a poor platform. Things just improve over time. And nobody knows what an HHR is?? Come on, get real.

Yeah, that failed Ford "Panther" platform just about makes me sick.

They can't get rid of that failure soon enough...

(Enough sarcasm?)

Did you say this knowing I own a Panther, or is this just beatiful coincidence? Either way, LOL!

That ford panther comment was bull [censored].

As for the HHR, most of yall know I HATE chevys...but I must say it is a nice looking car. Cool styling.

I've rented several HHR's, and I've never been disappointed.

I've also rented several PT Cruisers, and I've ALWAYS been disappointed.

Whats wrong with fords design? It only last{ed} 30 years?

My experience with HHRs is mostly just off lease and ex rental/company cars. Be cautious buying a used HHR. They are one of those cars where more are abused than treated well.

They are pretty reliable. The electric power steering isn't the most reliable thing in the world, but other than that they are good mechanically. The interiors are cheap and ugly, but acceptable for the price range.

You guys find that in a manual tranny HHR the shifter is located to far back? Almost like you have to reach behind yourself to shift?

Manual HHRs must be a Canadian thing. I've never seen one in person. Just a ton of base model autos and a handful of LTs.

Nope, didn't know that. Glad you enjoyed it.... unlike someone else, who couldn't figure out the sarcasm (even though I mentioned that it WAS sarcasm....)

Very few. Most are the result of engineering decisions.

In my paltry 40 years of fleet ownership and personal stable of hipo vehicles I would tend to agree.

The assembly is 'dumbed down' to where it's hard to mess up.

Most problems are also related to the Stealerships being unwilling or unable to fix the car!

My firsthand knowledge backs up those statements!

There are quite a few manual HHR's in the states. If you look, you can get a low mileage unit for under 10 grand.

I'd bet that a Manual HHR was never a rental or fleet car either.

Chevy is still using the Getrag manual transmission, it is tried and true. I have one in my saturn ion with the same engine as well.

I can't believe that the panel version hasn't taken off as an alternative to small pickups and vans in commercial use. I installed satellite dishes in college, and we ran S-10s - I would have loved to had one of these as an alternative!

The Ecotec engine in these is great, and the 4 speed tranny is bulletproof.
