Cheerios : Do they really lower cholesterol ?

They "may" (and I think that's why the FDA went all up in arms with their most recent advertising claims....) but it all depends on your diet....It's primarily the "fiber content" that aides in the lower cholesterol....so ya, honestly, you're probably better off eating a bowl of quaker oat's oatmeal for break fast.....but yea, those can get bland after a while

Try garlic.....MINUS the salt. Real garlic (either pill form or herb...) but yea, the Garlic "Salt" will be negating the affects you'll be getting from the garlic :P

My "gut feeling" is no, Cheerios can't lower cholesterol. Eating that many carbs does little good for many sedentary Americans.

Egg whites have no fat so they're good for you. Three slices of bacon has 5g of satured fat so it's not a problem as long as that's the only bad stuff you eat each day. The issue is when people eat like that the ENTIRE day. They end up eating 20g of sat. fat and their cholesterol goes ballastic. It all comes down to portion control.

For the OP--

Rolled oats is much better for you than cherrios (also much cheaper!). Eat it with nonfat milk and berries

Flush free niacin (inositol hexan.) has no impact on cholesterol levels. Only the nicotinamide form affects cholesterol (it has been shown in studies). There is only one slow-release nicotinamide product available OTC and it does cause occasional flushing. It also has a slightly higher incidence of liver damage than the rapid release OTC form

If you take theuraputic doses of niacin you must have your liver checked
 
cut out all sugars containing frucose unless bound in fibre (e.g. fresh fruit). honey (40%), HFCS (55-65%), plain sugar (50%) all contain fructose.
 
extruded oat goo is so processed it's hard to imagine ANYTHING good about it.

Eat REAL NATURAL minimally processed oats (if you're not allergic to them) for any benefits, but don't expect magic cholesterol reductions.

Those of you who have been programmed about the evils of cholesterol should look at the evidence linking low levels to stroke. It's much more important to get the ratios of LDL vs. HDL adjusted than to freak out over a total number.
 
One of the most important things to realize is that amongst phenotypes within the human race, some produce / retain cholesterol at a higher rate. Some are non-responsive to certain drugs. Some naturally have high cholesterol, even to the "bad" stuff, and live a long time without issue.

Im not sure that everything with this is understood to the fullest detail. Statistical trends, yes, but the actual physiological and biochemical aspects, not sure.

Fiber is good for a number of reasons. Soluble fiber is in the bloodstream, and can interact certain ways with certain things. It also generally makes you eat less and that is always beneficial. You can also get very reliant on fiber...

Everything within moderation...
